PhysicalPursuits Athletics Striving for Five In keeping with Brisbane Girls Grammar School Athletics history, the 2006 Track and Field Team has had an extremely successful year. Following four consecutive QGSSSA Championships, we set our minds to “Strive for Five!” The team began training under the watchful eye of our Head Coach, Mr T Booth in early June. Spanning a five month period, the Athletics Squadhasexperiencedtheextremes of both heat and cold. We overcame the great desires to stay cuddled up in the warmth of our beds to attend early winter morning trainings and faced the blazing midday sun in the September holidays leading up to our final competition. The Interhouse Athletics was a fantastic day, displaying the spirit, speed, stamina, strength and sportsmanship of not only the Athletics Team, but all competitors. Congratulations must go to Alexandra Stevens (8G), Isabeau Williams (9R) and Bethany Holt (9B) who earned the joint title of the BGGS 2006 Interhouse Athletics Champion. Gibson House must also becommendedfortheiroutstanding performanceswhichresultedintheir overall win of the Interhouse Competition. This energetic day gave our athletes a small taste of what was to come on October 16. On this date, the long anticipated QGSSSA Athletics was held at the QEII Warm Up Track. Brisbane Girls Grammar School showcased their determination and skill yet again. Withguidance fromour co-ordinator, Mrs A Dabelstein and the 2006 Captains, Elizabeth Moule and Georgina Porter, the School Athletics Team took the nine other schools by storm. The huge sacrifices the athletes had made throughout the season, which included holiday training sessions,

Volleyball Astounding achievement The success of Volleyball cannot be attributed to the talent of our girls alone but to the harmony and cohesion that the Volleyball girls share. The players have immense proficiency and a Girls Grammar spirit that enables them to bring home premiership pennants regularly. Every one of these girls has also brought her own personal traits to the Volleyball community, enhancingourseasonandproviding us with memories to last a lifetime. The laughs, injuries and ‘holes’ have truly made this season one to be remembered. QGSSSA has always been Girls GrammarVolleyball’smain focus but the Queensland Schools Cup and Australian Schools Cup have providedourteamswithcompetition of an even higher standard. This has only served to encourage our girls to reach new heights. In the Christmas holidays of 2005, four teams travelled to Melbourne to compete in the prestigious Australian Schools Cup. It was amazing to see how the teams stepped up to a new level to match it with the more experienced southern schools. We returned with two gold medals and one silver, the first medals Girls Grammar has won at a national level. This was an astounding achievement. TheQGSSSA2006ArtisticGymnastics seasonproved tobe very successful. The competitions were held at Moreton Bay College onWednesday 3 and Thursday 4 May. Our wonderful team of 51 students from all Year levels competed to the best of their abilities. This helped us to achieve the highest overall position based on places in each division. The entire team performed with determination and style with an average score of 9.2 - a very good result indeed. Special mention must go to Charlotte Greenfield (8H) for scoring a ‘perfect 10’ on the uneven bars in the Year 8(ii) division. This has never been accomplished before by a Brisbane Girls Grammar student. Due to new coding rules, a perfect 10 will never be seen again in any competition as the highest score, so we congratulate Charlotte on this amazing feat. Danielle Cook (9M) courageously competed in the Open Division as a one-man team. She competed confidently and performed extremely well against some of Queensland’s finest gymnasts. The first official Artistic Gymnastics dinner was held on 5 May at Ballymore. We were fortunate to have an Australian gold medallist from the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Ms Naomi Russell, as the guest speaker. She spoke of her experiences at the Games and her life as an elite gymnast. Her speech was inspiring and thoroughly enjoyed by all gymnasts present.

Basketball Inspiring role models
The 2006 Basketball season has been successful and exciting as teams faced difficult and determined opposition in many close and challenging games. Beginning in Term IV of 2005, the trial process identified the depth of talent that would make this season so successful. We were fortunate to field nine QGSSSA teams as well as an additional two club teams this season, more than any other school within our competition. This is a tremendous achievement and all girls should be proud of the way they conducted themselves on court and at training. The most significant aspect of this season has been the changes made to coaching personnel. For the first time, the coaches for all QGSSSA Basketball teams were female. This is important in the sense that strong female sporting role models are seen as vital people in the fight to stem the physical activity drop-out rate that seems to be a feature of our modern society. In these experienced and dedicated coaches the girls were able to see first-hand exactly what it takes to perform at a competitive level in the QGSSSA competition. With the addition of talented new players and coaches, as well as the return of two and three year veterans, the Open Team led by example exhibiting outstanding team spirit and determination during gruelling training seasons in the lead up to the first game against Moreton Bay College.
We thank all of the coaching staff who put in so much time and effort to train the girls for their tough competitions. Our gratitude must go to Mrs N Robbins, our co-ordinator, who spent much time and energy organising us thus ensuring that the season ran smoothly.
