Touching support

When considering Touch, a relatively new sport at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, many students find the number of losses by the Open team humorous. However, this did not discourage the students, from Year 8 to Year 12, who turned up in astounding numbers to the team trials. They were very keen to participate in this emerging QGSSSA sport. It is unfortunate that only nine divisions exist in the competition, with Grammar fielding eight. Because of the enthusiasm Grammar athletes put into Touch, many more junior teams could be formed. The 2005 Touch season was off to a great start with the support the teams gave to one another. In a development from past seasons, inter-team interaction between different age groups was a defining factor. It started with the Opens teaching the Year 8s the School war cry before the first game. This led to different age groups playing against each other at training, and the 8As wishing the Opens “Good Luck” before each game. Many friends were made, not only within teams, but also from the entire Grammar Touch community.

Grammar Volleyball for us has not only been about the game but also about the players, and the great sense of unity we share. Each player has been a valuable member of the Volleyball community and has contributed something special to the success of this season. The humour, the laughs and a sense of fun have truly made this season one to be remembered. The great depth and array of talent displayed by all girls have been remarkable. Their enthusiasm for all aspects of the game, their competitive streak and determined fighting spirit have been truly inspirational. If the girls continue on this path, Grammar Volleyball will reach unparalleled heights in future seasons. Over the past few years Volleyball has gained momentum and now our athletes have the confidence to dominate the court in every aspect of the game. In the QGSSSA season, Grammar girls won an amazing 153 sets out of 159. This is testament to the great skill and abilities of the girls, as well as the coaches – to whom we are very grateful. Such has been the depth of Grammar Volleyball that many of our players have represented Metropolitan North and Queensland. This season Grammar’s domination of the QGSSSA competition is evident with five of six premierships.

Since Touch began at Grammar five years ago, the results have steadily improved. This year, the 8B and 10B teams won individual premierships, and all other Grammar touch teams improved their results from 2004. 2005 was Grammar’s most successful year of Touch. This was highlighted by the fact that every team won their games against Clayfield College, a feat which has never before been accomplished in Grammar’s Touch history. 2005 Touch was not only challenging and rewarding, but enjoyable for all players. The enthusiasm every player contributed was remarkable, and we can only hope that Grammar Touch continues in this vein for years to come.

The Years 8, 9 and 10 teams competed in the grueling Junior Schools Cup in October. While the Year 8 team was unfortunately defeated in their final, the all-conquering Year 9 team, who had not dropped a set all QGSSSA season, took out the title going through the competition undefeated. We are immensely proud and grateful to have been Volleyball Captains this year. Each girl has made a lasting impression on us and has made this our most rewarding season. We wish all volleyball players the best of luck and success in the future. Leave nothing in the tank, just crank it!
