At the start of the swimming season, the Captains set themselves a goal. They intended to search out a larger group of girls to become involved in swimming and, ultimately, improve our 2004 overall position in the QGSSSA competition. They also wanted to intensify the spirit within the School and fill our allocated Grammar area with enthusiastic supporters on the big day. After a season of hard training and bonding in the pool, it was gratifying to see that the Captains had achieved their goal. This was due not only to the dedication of all of the swimmers, but also to the support received from the rest of the School community. It was genuinely thrilling to have the School boost the swimmers so strongly. The road to this success started at the new combined Swimming and Water Polo camp at Runaway Bay Sports Centre in January. This brought a wider range of talented girls into the sights of the swimming coaches and co-ordinator. This talent was enhanced as the season continued, with the usual range of competitions and hard training. Outside of the pool arena, the senior swimmers Get wet, go wild - for your School
Serving up success
Success, food, friendship, team spirit and fitness all culminated together to form the bonds that united the 2005 Brisbane Girls Grammar School teams into a cohesive company of players. Through wins and losses, rain and shine, all teams battled their way through gruelling matches to come out with a feeling of pride, accomplishment and, in most cases, victory. The season bore witness to the blossoming of all players, particularly the Year 8s who are new to the Grammar community. The traditional Brisbane Girls Grammar School morning teas were once again an integral part of tennis fixtures. For each home match, a prize was awarded to the player who brought the most innovative food item. This proved to be a great hit with the girls who all put in a superlative effort each week, making the judging a very difficult task. With such a large variety of food, there was something to excite everyone’s tastebuds. One only needed to gather around the morning tea table to experience the unmistakable Grammar vibe. This vibe of friendship and team spirit enabled our girls to go that extra yard, giving their matches everything they had.
caps and goggles. The aim of this endeavour was to encourage the younger girls to support the Brisbane Girls Grammar Swimming team at QGSSSA.
With two training sessions a week as well as the games, the consistent commitment that all girls displayed was inspiring. While some girls struggled with the early winter mornings, their persistence was rewarded with great results in matches. The 2005 season has proven to be more than wins and losses. It has been the community for students of all Year levels to come together to celebrate the one love, the game of tennis. Sporting involvement is never simply a matter of athletic prowess. Even in sports where one player battles it out alone on the court, Grammar girls stand on the sidelines in solidarity. It’s all about the team. Lauren Mills (12M) & Stacey Jackson (12M) CAPTAINS
At 4.00pm on Thursday 10 March, the seventy-five girls of the Grammar swim team walked into the Chandler Stadium to the cheers of over 200 Grammar supporters showing the intensity of their Grammar spirit. Our swimmers made a tremendous show on the night, achieving an overall position of fourth place, behind other schools esteemed for their swimmers. Special congratulations must go to the 13 years who won their age group, with particular mention of Jade Yarborough (8O) and Megan Mackay (8O), both of whom won individual events on the night. These successes in the pool were made possible by the swimmers’ commitment and talent, but bolstered by the belief that they swam for and were valued by their peers.
