English as a Second Language continues to play an important supportive role in the School. These special English classes are designed to meet the individual coinmunicative needs of the students who speak a language other than English in the home. Students enjoy a small class environment in which they are encouraged to participate actively in authentic tasks, to ask questions and to seek assistance about any aspect of their coursework. The classes are held one afternoon per week after school. Kana Aoki from Seirinkan High School joined the ESL programme in April this Year, as an EXchange Student from our Sister School in Japan. it is always a pleasure to welcome such students to the ESL class as each student brings a unique outlook on life and her own cultural perspective to group discussions on a range of topics. Kana also receives two individual classes of ESL per week which help her to meet the academic, social and cultural challenges of life as a full-time Brisbane Girls Grammar School student for the year.

THE REALITY CULTURAL DIFFERENCES Hello - I'm Kana Aoki from your sister up their babies in their pouches gone. There is a difference between the koalas school, Seirinkan High School, in Japan and kangaroos in zoos and those in the I'd like to write about the differences between the view that Japanese people wild. Another example would be that of have of Australian icons and Australians macadamia nuts. Whenever I go to the souvenir shops, I always find the have of Japanese culture. chocolate-coated macadainia n uts. If they When Japanese people think about are so popular. why is it that I've only seen think of koalas and Australia, we people who bring macadamia nuts for ka riga roos first. Koalas, kangaroos, other morning tea or lunch a few times. wild animals and birds are used for Since I've been in Australia, I've been souvenirs and they are even used on the Australian Coat of Arms. However, I have asked lots of questions about Japan. I'd never seen koalas and kangaroos in the like to write about some of these. Firstly, I wild. I think if they are so famous, we was asked whether Japanese people eat should be able to see them as often as we whales or not. I don't think I've had whale meat before, but we used to eat it. When see cats and dogs! The koalas and my parents were in primary school, it was kangaroos in the zoo made me feel served for lunch at school. Secondly, I was disappointed, because the kangaroos were asked whether I've got Bonsai trees at always lying down and looked sleepy and the koalas were always asleep in the trees. home. I wonder why Bonsai is so famous, Where have the kangaroos. which have because I don't have anything like Bonsai such strong kicks and the koalas who bring at home. in one of the popular cartoons on
television, which has been around since my parents were children, the character's dad does Bonsai, but I don't know anyone who is interested in Bonsai, except him So I was surprised that Bonsai is so famous and everyone knows this word. I'm glad to see lots of people eat Sushi, but it is a bit different from the Japanese one' There is no Chicken Teriyaki Sushi in Japan and we don't use avocados in Sushi either. Some people use it when they make Sushi at home, but I have never seen avocados in Sushi at a Japanese restaurant. I like Chicken Teriyaki, though. I've found it very interesting to find the differences between Australia n and Japanese cultu re. However, in spite of the differences, I've found that in both countries, the people are nice and friendly. And I think that's the most important thing of all. Kana ADki 11 Woolcock
