The competitive year for sport at BGGS traditionally begins with softball - and what a great beginning it was, bringing home Grammar's first pennant for the Year. We fielded two teams in Term One: Open and Senior A, with the Year 8.9 and 10 teams competing at the end of the Year The Senior As, once again under the guidance of past captain and current A3 Club player, Michelle Beutel, had a strong season, improving on their third place last season. Finishing runner-up for the premiership, it was a matter of time, umpiring decisions and an incomplete innings over the four weeks of competition that cost them the pennant by only one point. This does not undermine the fact that they had an active and enthusiastic season, and, as Michelle said of them, "They are a team of fun-loving girls, but they know when to put their heads down and put in the hard work. " In the Senior A competition, the games are not so much dominated by the pitchers Ias is the case in the Open competitionI, but by the batters. Outstanding performances from the Senior A team included consistent batting from Elizabeth Wheeler, who achieved a batting average of .600. Of the thirteen girls in the team. seven achieved a batting average of .400 or over. Keeping in mind that Australian representative players usually achieve a batting average of around .200 to .300, this is an amazing effort by the girls The Senior As farewelled five Year 125, most of whom have been with Grammar softball for the last five Years. These are Kate Ashby, Elizabeth Wheeler, Adele Hatt and Catherine Anderson. Special mention must go to Felicity Bennetts for her scoring efforts for this team for the past two seasons. Her contribution to BGGS softball and her efforts were appreciated by all This Year, the Open team was lucky to have as coach, Iudy Young, the Drector of Coaching at Queensland Softball. With Iudy's support and enthusiasm, skills and knowledge of the game, the Open team won the pennant outright being the only team undefeated during the season. Last Year's joint premiership under the captaincy of Geraldine Wright laid the foundation for outright victory this Year Every member of the team brought special skills and talents and all contributed to the success. This Year, we welcomed two Year 10 rookies, Kate Martin and Anna Hogan. While Kate and Anna were new to Open softball at BGGS, both are Brisbane representative under 16 players Outstanding performances of the Open team members during our season included outstanding batting by Kirby Short and Gemma Deal who achieved final batting averages of .576 and .500 respectively. Kirby Short also was co-captain of the Queensland Under 16 Girls SoftballTeam, which was runners-up to Victoria at the National Championships in HDbart in January. The Open team will also be farewelling five dedicated, spirited and talented Year 12 softballers this Year, including Geordan Shannon, Kate Robinson, Erin Cooper, Amelia Taylor and Sally Clout. Sally, although injured, continued to provide support to the team throughout the season
