ROWING
The 2000 Grammar Rowing season was one of joy, disappointment and one particularly windy day. This year the season began early for the over-eager senior rowers, with pre- season training on Sunday afternoons and weights sessions during the week, organised by Peter Finch. For the just as enthusiastic Year 85 and new rowers, learn-to-row sessions were held at Forest Lake prior to the Easter holidays. Second term brought about a series of selection trials for all rowers. These consisted of both ergometer and sculling trials in which the Year 85 took part for the first time on Wivenhoe Dam. Whilst some Year 85 ended the race wet due to capsizing, others took a longer course to the opposite bank. The rest rowed the race with ease indicating a successful season was in store for Grammar Warner, Vanessa Weekes, Katherine Clarkson, Anna Langton, Tamara MacGinley, Suzannah Ohtomo, Jessica Heading and Joanna Schmidt as the first eight crew for 2000. The second eight consisted of Fiona Gray, Pia Cavanagh, Emilie Berzins, Amy Hillhouse, Dominique Favell, Libby Gill, Bella Lurid, Phoebe Lynch and Kylie Gray. Rest is for the weak, and while some girls were skiing or lazily soaking up sunlight during the June Holidays, forty Girls Grammar rowers from Years 10 to 12 descended on the Maroochy River Holiday Resort for the annual Rowing camp. This week gave our rowers a sense of accomplishment and prepared them to take on our competition. Later in the holidays, the Years 85 and 95 launched into a rowing camp of their own at the BGS rowing shed. This week enabled girls not only to row with their own crews, but also to fill in other crews which gave the girls a range of experiences and challenges! Racing season for Grammar Rowers kicked off with our own regatta held on 22 July.
