SWIMMING
The BGGS Swimming Season 2000 officially commenced in January with a three-day training camp at Noosa. Forty-five students, including eight new Year 8 students, attended the camp. An intensive program of training and team building followed, and the camp helped boost the morale among the squad members. A seven-week intensive regime of training and time-trials followed. This included three time- trial carnivals against other QGSSSA schools, at the Valley, Centenary and Musgrave Park Pools. On Wednesday 23 February the annual Inter house Swimming Carnival was held at the 51eeman Sports Centre, Chandler. There was a great atmosphere of fun and competition. Lilley House won the Lilley Inter house Swimming Cup and the Lt Col Plant Challenge Cup for Individual Events, and congratulations must also go to O'Connor House for winning the Burrell Cup for Relays. The 2000 School Swimming Champion is Belinda Nevell, having won the 17 Years and Over Age Championship with thirty individual points and winning a nailbiter Open 50m Freestyle Championship, narrowly beating Sarah Holtam and Courtney Gumbley. This performance was particularly outstanding as Belinda hasjust returned from a tiring two weeks touring Europe with the Australian swimming team.
