Just prior to the Queensland titles, BGGS fielded two teams in the Queensland Girls Secondary School teams racing champi- onships. For the third consecutive year, our A-team won, but the highlight was seeing our B team win third place behind Lourdes Hill. Congratulations to Jessie Mccawley, Fiona Hogg, Julia Nathanson, Catherine Harrington, Chrissie Nisbet-Smith, Franceska Wardell, Molly Banner and Margot Tait. After the Open win which received wide media coverage, the A-team of SarahRoberts-Thomson, LisaCharlson, Julia Patterson, Brooke Schmidt, Danielle Medek, Kate Matley and Kate Suridge settled down to the hard training regime of regular gym work, rules sessions and weekly on-water sessions at Mooloolaba in preparation for the Nationals. Seven teams competed for the Austral\an Seconda1y Schools teams racing title at Mooloolaba in July in a hard-fought regatta over five days. The New South Wales team frqm Pittwater High came first, South Australia's P01t Lincoln High second, BGGS third, followed by Christchurcl1'Grammar (WA) 4, The Hutchins School (Tas) 5; Sandringham Secondary College (Vic) 6 and the ACT. Grateful thanks go to the team's major sponsor - Credit Union Australia whose support enabled the girls to focus on training, as well as Lincolne Scott Australia Pty Ltd, Triple Mand Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. It was pleasing to see Catherine Harrington and Fiona Hogg selected for the Metropolitan East team to compete in the Queensland Regional titles . In the subsequent competition where Julia Nathanson replaced Catherine, the Girls' team won - Congratulations! Saturday fleet sailing at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Manly in the school 's three Corsair dinghies is proving popular with young sailors. With the assistance of supportive parents and guidance ofour enthusiastic Co-ordinator Mr Bany Greatorex and Coach Simone Parker, the sport of Sailing at BGGS has never looked healthier. This was recently evidenced by Girls Grammar fielding two teams in the South Queensland Junior teams racing titles which saw some promising form and close competition. RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS at Brisbane Girls Grammar this year has had many successes. Despite the fact that we did not compete for the first time in the National Classic Clubs Cham- pionship, our achievements at State Titles were in no way diminished. On 30 and 31 August , the BGGS RSG Club marched onto the mats to compete in the 1997 Queensland Rhythmic Gymnastic Championships . We had an extremely strong team of 40 gymnasts who had successfully qualified their routines earlier this year. The team was comprised of gymnasts from all levels from 1-10 as well as girls from our elite squad. The strength and dominance of the Girls Grammar gymnasts was evidenced by the overall medal tally of 54 gold, 36 silver and 23 bronze. Special commendations must be given to the following State Champions for 1997: Chloe Michael - Elite Stage 3, Shae Wright - Junior Elite, Eliza Gower - Junior Elite Apparatus Champion, Julie Barry - Level 10, Andrea Noon - Level 9, Rebecca Barnes - Level 8, Lindsay Green - Level 7, Georgia Powell - runner-

It was also at this competition that our 5 Level 7-10 gymnasts were named in the State Gymnastics Team to contest the National Senior Levels Championships in Da1win from 1-6 October. Congratulations to these girls as each qualified for the finals on every apparatus. Andrea Noon is now the National Allround Level 9 Champion and Lindsay Green gained two bronze medals in her Level 7 finals. At a pre-Nationals competition the same 5 girls, joined by Shae Wright and Jessica Pickup, and 3 gymnasts from Western Australia represented Australia at an International Competition in Christchurch, New Zealand. The girls were judged on the international Elite Code of Points and achieved outstanding results gaining 5 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze . Within the club is a group of younger girls who have been training at an elite level in the sport. These girls, Shae Wright, Chloe Michael, Jessica Pickup, Amanda Lee See and future member ofBGGS in 1998 Eliza Gower have represented Queens- land and Australia this year. All of them have been named in the National Squad. Their performances have been outstanding and they have embarked upon many exciting tours in which they have successfully competed at an international level. In March, after the Elite Australian Championships, they toured South Africa and Malaysia. At the Stellenbosch Interna- tional they gained the Gold medal for their Junior Elite Group performance closely followed by the British and German teams. Additionally our 4 individual gymnasts were the highest quali- fiers into the finals and Eliza gained the gold medal for her stunning Hoop performance. At the Four Continents Tournament the group qualified Australia to compete at the Junior Pacific Alliance Competition to be held in Colorado Springs U.S.A. Eliza Gower recently competed at the AEON Cup in Japan. Her draw placed her on the mat following the Russian Junior Champion. Eliza's exceptional marks in execution are an indication of the calibre of her performance. The club is continuing its education program for coaching and judging and 15 new Level 1 judges have joined the club list of qualified officials.
