team was Sidney Cubasch and Shona Millman from O'Connor House. Sidney Cubasch's representative honours for the year in- cluded the Under 14 Doubles Championship in January at the Australian Junior Tennis Championships, and in June, she won the Under 13 Singles division at the Tower Little Masters Queensland Championships. The Brisbane Girls Grammar School CROSS COUNTRY team has once again enjoyed a successful season. Under the capable influence of Mr Booth, the loved and sometimes stern Cross country coach, Brisbane Girls Grammar was able to achieve an overall first place in the annual QGSSSA competition at Loganlea, May 24th. Grammar emerged on the day as the winners in the under 15 years and 16 years age groups and received second in all other age groups, the under 13 years, 14 years and Open age group . These results gave Grammar an overall 47 points defeating Moreton Bay College and State High who tied for 2nd place on 37 points.
place . It was through this competition that many girls qualified for the State Championships at Charters Towers in the June/July holidays . Grammar participants in the State championships included Sarah Bitomsky, Erin Lambert, Georgina Mewing, Kate Pippos and Sharon Wouda . Sarah Bitomsky and Erin Lambert were fortunate to qualify for the nationals, but unfortunately Sarah was unable to participate due to injury. The successful achievements of our Cross Country squad this year were due to not only our individual stars, but to all those girls who relentlessly plugged away at those excruciat- ingly painful uphills and repetitions in Victoria Parle The 1997 Brisbane Girls Grammar School Cross Country Team proved when the going gets tough, Grammar gets tougher. This year saw the ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS competition moved into TermThree. The shift into the colder months did not faze our gymnasts with BGGS retaining the overall premiership for the 9th consecutive year, leading Somerville House by a record breaking 25 points. Excellent results were obtained by the Year 8 teams, with both teams gaining 1st place in their respective sections . Phoebe Mc Giffin gave wonderful performances on all four apparatus, scoring the highest overall score for Year 8.
There were some excellent individual performances on the day from all age groups . Firstly, SarahBitomsky placed first in the Under 16 age group with the time of 14 minutes and 37 seconds over 4 km. Girls in the top three placings included Sophie Cameron, Erin Lambert and Hannah Bishop from the Under 13 yrs , 14 yrs and 16 yrs respectively. Other girls to be commended for their effort on the day include Stephanie Boughen, Amelia Stephens, Clair Cameron, Georgina Mewing, Kate Pippos, Danielle Collins, Caitlin Marley, Helen Clark, Rachelle Wu and Sharon Wouda who all placed in their top ten. The success of the QGSSSA team, however, would not have been possible without the participation of girls in meets approaching the official competition. This year, girls once again had the privilege to participate in meets held by various QGSSSA schools but also in GPS meets. These competitions played a major part in developing the strength of the team and resulted in providing Girls Grammar with an edge over their rivals on the day . After the success of the QGSSSA competition, Grammar went on to achieve some even more outstanding results in the regional competition held at Kedron State High School, 18th June. Here , Grammar placed first in the Under 13, 14, 15 and 16 years and 2nd in the Open division and won the award for first
