I nteract is the jun- ior branch of Rotary with its aim here and throughout the world being to serve the com- munity and help those less for- tunate than ourselves. The BGGS branch, with over 100 members, is affiliated with Windsor Rotary. To them and especially to Mr Brier Thomas, we acknowledge a debt of gratitude for their en- couragement and assistance. Fund-raising began with a bang on St Valentine's Day with the sale of heart-shaped bal- loons to those students game enough to give them as presents.

This year marked the begin- ning of an association with an- other Interact Club at the Good Shepherd School, Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, India. As an intro- duction to BGGS, we sent them a copy ofour 1996 School maga- zine . We expect this bond with our new sister school will strengthen. In 1997, over $6000 has been distributed by BGGS Interact to organizations in need of finan- cial assistance . Included in these are the Windsor Women's Shel- ter and the Canteen Children's Cancer Fund.

Rather more strenuous was the Windsor Rotary Lapathon at Kedron High School. The handout stated: "Participants must complete at least 20 laps ." Our parents ' pantries were raided to assist the Club Ninety- six organization to provide hampers for families whose tables would not be groaning with the excess so many of us take for granted. As always, Grammar girls were prominent amongst the volunteers door-knocking their suburbs to assist with the annual Salvation Army Red Shield appeal. Later in the year followed the Red Cross Door Knock which was again supported by our girls. Stamps were collected in their thousands to provide funds for poliomyelitis vaccination campaigns in developing countries.

Our ongoing support of the needy sees us sponsoring a Kenyan girl, Ruth Kimani. Through our funding to World Vision, Ruth is currently studying a secretarial course at the Kenyatta University Bureau of Training and Consultancy. Cor- respondence with her has proved she is a hard-working and dedicated student. Projects such as this highlight the importance of Interact on a global scale. Thanks must go to Mr Blundell for his hard work and assistance. His enthusiastic approach to managing the Interact Club made our fund-raising efforts all the more enjoyable. Best of luck and all good wishes to the new Board for next year. MELISSA HICKEY PRESIDENT

Karate

B GGS Karate has been go- ing now for over three years , and this year we have had more girls competing in tourna- ments than ever before. On March 23rd, several of our members par- ticipated and received places in the 1997 Australian Karate Acad- emy Brisbane Karate Champion- ships. For most of them it was their first competition, and so the results were quite pleasing. On 24th August , the AKA Koshinkan Cup was held in the

and, of course, from Girls Gram- mar. In this tournament , Kate Bourne (Year Eleven), received second place in her kata division, and Vivien Stewart (Year Eleven), received first place for kata . We are looking forward to fu- ture competitions when our pur- ple belts will start to compete in the kumite (sparring) divisions. We have members from Years

Nine, Ten and Eleven, and one past student who continues to train with us. New members are always welcome, and we hope to have karate-ka from eve1y year level in the future.
