Anitnal Protection Society

1 997 has been a fantastic year for the Animal Protection Society (A.P.S.). The A.P.S. raises funds to help animals in need of care. This year the society has raised funds for the R.S.P .C.A. which shelters animals that have been neglected or mistreated. R.S .P.C.A. is an association which has no govern- ment funds and therefore relies entirely on the community and organisations like A.P.S. to provide financial assistance to supply the vital requirements of animals in need. A.P.S. has five board members and approximately sixty students. The board members have worked tirelessly, putting endless hours and effort into their jobs and are to be congratu- lated. During 1997 A.P .S. has raised funds by holding sweet stalls and raffles at Interhouse Swimming and Athletics Carnivals along with a photo competition which was a lot of fun . It was entertaining to see so many funny animals captured on camera. We have also participated in the R.S .P.C.A. Million Paws Walk and the R.S.P .C.A. door knock appeal. The Million Paws Walk was great fun . Approximately one thousand dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes dressed as flowers, pirates and even clowns, went for a quick morning stroll with their owners. The A.P .S. students have contributed towards our funds tremendously by attending meetings, bringing weird and won- derful animal-shaped lollies for the stalls and giving up their valuable time to participate in activities. A.P .S. has also worked

to create awareness of the need to protect animals by pasting signs around the school. We are also planning to have a guest speaker to talk about animal cruelty. Many animals will be saved from cruel misfortune through the help given by our society. KATE GILMORE PRESIDENT
