"I was pieity unremarkable at school, " she recalled, "but my great Interests were Music and English. I owe my love for English literature to my Ieacher Miss Alexis MacMillan: she was a friend of my mother's when SITe taught at Rockhampton Grammar School before coming to BCGS. " While Miss MacMillan instilled in heI' a delight in the per- rection of expression, Dr Harwood's Art Mistress, Miss Vei'a Cotton, was another wonderful teacher, who illumi- nated the whole world of Art for. lier young student. Gwen Foster learnt both piano and organ from the disiin- guished Brisbane nTusician Dr Robei. I Dalley-Scarlett Aftei' leaving BGGS she became ills Deputy Organist at the historic All Saints' Church, Wickham Terrace, a POSi- tion she held from 1938-1945. "All the real omanists were at war, " she laughed. On September 4,1945, Gwen Foster married Frank William (Bill) Harwood at All Saints' Church and moved to Tasmania. She returned on September 13 to celebrate the 1301h Anniversary of this beautiful church. Dr Harwood's verse is concerned with relationships - experiences shared with fellow poets, musicians and painters. Past and present. the sublime and the mundane ale all subjected to the keen scrutiny of this acute observer of life, and are frequently tempered by her ii'repressible sense of humour. Not SUI'prising Iy, Dr Hatwood is much in demand for Writers' gainerings Ihrouohout Australia, and was an honoured guest at the 1992 Warana Writers' Week
