ACHIEVERS
REPRESENTATIVE EXCELTENCE Members of the Physical Education staff have demonstrated that enthusiasm for their field is not confined to school hours. Their zeal has taken them right up to representing Australia in their chosen spofts. Miss Joanne Dempsey was selected in the Australian Under 22 Volleyball team in 1978, and then in the Australian Open Team in 1978. She held her place in the Australian Open Team until 1983, subsequently returning from Representative Sport to join the Staff of Brisbane Cirls' Crammar School in '1 984. Five years later she resumed playing and was reselected in the Australian team to participate in the 1989 Asian Cames in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, an injury forced Miss Dempsey to withdraw from the 1989 Touring Team. Meanwhile Miss Janelle Derrington, whose Representative career began with selection in the Queensland Open State Schoolgirls' Netball Team in 1980, worked steadily through the Queensland U21 Squad, U21 Tean.r and the Queensland Night Team. From'l 983 to 1986 she w'as in the Queensland Open State Team, and was selected again for 1988-1989 being Vice Captain in 1989. During 1987, she was coach for the Queensland U17 Team. Miss Derrington then achieved selection in the Australian Open Squad 1988/89, for which she attended training weekends at the A.l.S., and in Melbourne and Sydney. ln May 1989, the Squad played the touring West lndies Team, and won a hard-fought victory. Miss Dempsey and Miss Derrington have set a standard of excellence in their sports which our students will be proud to emulate.

DR DOROTHY WATTS Dr Dorothy Watts (History Department) gained her Ph.D. degree in Ancient History from the University of Queens- land in April. ln her research on aspects of Romano Brltish Christianity, Dr Watts devised criteria for the identification of Christian cemeteries and churches from fourth century Britain which should be of far-reaching benefit to arclraeol- ogists and anthropologists working in this field. She has had several articles from her research published in the U.K. and is now planning to publish her thesis in book form.
