1988 School Magazine

ffie7 /ee e R$e KET What better way to spend Wednesday and Friday after school than with a piece of willow branch in your hand hitting a piece of round red cork or leather? Cricket this season has been really exciting. Increased interest, a winning side and mainly fine weather have combined to make this season one of our best. We found ourselves playing enthralling matches against Clayf ield College, St Aidan's, St Margaret's, St John Fisher and Mt St Michael's every Wednesday afternoon, losing only the two games to Sr John Fisher and Mt St Michaels. The match against St John Fisher was especially exciting as we lost on the last ball of the game when they needed three to win and their captain hit a four. The superbr batting skills and excellent bowling of Rebecca Laun (captain), Alison Titley (vice-captain), Emma Woodall and Nikki Moreland, the outstanding wicket-keeping of Callie Simonidis and the consistency of the rest of the team enabled us to win the premiership for the second successive year and to be awarded the inaugural R.T. Warren Cup. The most outstanding player of the season was Alison Titley who was awarded the cup for the best all-rounder. Emma Woodall had the best batting aggregate and average oI 44.5 and Alison had the best bowling aggregate and average of 3.27 and Rebecca and Emma took the most catches. The B.G.C.S. club team, under the able captaincy of Sue Warren and dedicated coach Mr Warren, had an interesting season with exciting games against Pine Rivers beating them on two occasions. ln their division Emma Woodall was awarded the trophy for the best bowling aggregate of twenty-five wickets and she was third in the Most Outstanding Player for the season. We welcomed Sue Warren to our dedicated panel of coaches, comprising Mr Warren and Mr Buchanan, our organised and enthusiastic manager, Mr Bromiley, and our team "mt)m", Mrs Bradley. We would also like to thank our enthusiastic supporters who turned up to cheer us on. Especially would we like to thank Kate Moreland, Mrs Moreland and Mrs Titley for their support, the transport they supplied and the deliciously sumptuous afternoon teas which sustained us. We must-be the best ever looked after team! This season also included our f irst interstate match. The Normanby Oval of Boys' Grammar was invaded by girl cricketers f rom Lismore and B.C.C.S. and their supporters on 28th February. lt was a thrilling game and we were narrowly defeated by only six runs. lt was a great experience, an enjoyable day and one that we hope will be repeated in the future. We closed the season with our break-up on 17th April when we cruised Moreton Bay on a ten metre yacht. Although several people could not cope with the rough conditions, it was an enjoyable day for those who went. I would like to congratulate the whole team for a superb ef f ort all season. Thank you f or all the f antastic enthusiasm and support you have given the game and me. Good luck for the 1988,289 season. Elizabeth Buchanan
