MUSIC CAPTAINS' REPORT Music at B.C.C.S. th is year again proved to be one of the most popular facets of school life, providing enjoyment and fulfilment for everyone involved. Although the programme was not as hectic as it had been in past years, there was ample opportunity for the various groups to perform throughout the year. lt was obvious on these occasions that most people had put a lot of time and effort into rehearsing and preparing for the performances. Some of the highlights of the year were: Bth March Service of Praise and Than ksgiving at St. John's Cathedral. A wind ensemble, Chamber Strings and Concert Choir performed before and during the service. 6th April First Term Music Recital Evening. All the school music groups performed on this occasion. Bth -12th J u ne An n ual Com bined Music Camp at Alexand ra Head lands. 14th June - Music Camp Concert at Boys' Grammar. lBth and 19th July Clarinet Trio and Clarinet Choir competed in the Pine Rivers Music Contest, the Clarinet Trio receiving an encou ragement award and the Clarinet Choir being successful in gaining first place in their section. 7th September - Prom Concert (Theme: Australiana). 26th October - Fourth Term Recital Evening. At the b"ginning of the year the Music Department welcomed Miss Myers, a full-time string teacher. Her appointment to this new position proved to be most worthwhile, as she developed a very successful string programme within the school, which included the formation of two new groups, Chamber Strings and Training Strings. All of the school music groups performed really well during the year. At the Music Recital Evening in the first term, it was a pleasure to hear Girls'Choir a new vocal grou p that was f ormed to cater f or the increasing number of girls wishing to sing and to gain choral experience while at the school. lt was also nice to see how much String Orchestra improved this year with the help of Miss Myers. Keep up the good work! At the start of semester two, we returned to f ind that Mr. Wakefield had resigned as Director of Music. Many adjustments to the music Department, including staff re-allocation, were necessary in the wake of his rather sudden departure, but things were running smoothly again after the f irst couple of weeks of third term. We would Iike to thank everyoh€, particularly the grade twelves, for the tremendous support and encourage- ment that we, as Music Captains, received throughout the year. lt really was greatly appreciated. RECORDER CONSORT This year Recorder Consort has taken many leaps to establish itself as a group with a very different sound! 1984 saw the addition of a soprano and a bass recorder which greatly improved the balance of the group and made us capable of living up to the name "consort". We are comprised of players from Years B to'11 and our repertoire spans from the medieval period of the very modern (and sometimes weird) music of contemporary com posers" Many thanks must go to Mrs. Maddeh, our effervescent conducto r,for making rehearsals fun as well as effective despite the f reezing 7.30 a.m. practice every Wed nesday !
