1984 School Magazine
NETBALL REPORT The 1984 Netball Season started with a boom as a successful and enjoyable trip to New Zealand was undertaken by a team of 9 Netballers, along with the Hockey, Tennis and Volleyball players. During this trip the team, which comprised members of both the A and B Grade, experienced situations which will not be f orgotten : the h igh ly am using 3 cheers f or " What's the name of the school?" before each match, the nice Tauranga cou rts (f u n, f u n, f u n), and even the disappointment when the message was passed down the back of the bus that Netball and Tennis had been called off in Wanganui. After the completion of the tour, the team returned all psyched up, along with the other Netball teams, for a iuccessf u I game against St. Peter's; that's where the problem started. Unfortunately, due to the rainy weather, none of the teams played St. Peter's, and this seemed to be a forecast (there's a pun to match Ann Harrap's "reigning" prn!!) for the rest of the season as neither the l.G.G.S. nor the Somerville House games were played. Despite this fact all the teams did have a successf u I season, playing hard games against B.S. H.S. and interesting ones against St. Margaret's, where new discoveries were maCe in regard to netball ability with new defence patterns displayed by Vicki Powell and Joanne Hilder, attack from Jane Kaesehagen, Sue Batstone and Barbie Gracey. The results for the season were A Grade third, B Grade third, C Grade undefeated and officially edged out of the premiership due to a cancellation of fixtures, D Grade unofficial premiership which will hopefully become official in 1985, Crade 9A third, Grade 98 unofficial third, Grade BA third and BB fourth. We were consistent to say the least! While we were braving the weather in New Zealand, Sue Batstone, as a member of the Qld. tJ/12 Netball Te?ffi, went to Alice Sptings for the National Championships. Three Queenslanders were chosen for an Australian Squad, and Sue was one of them. She went to the Australian lnstitute of Sport in September. This is a remarkable achievement and Sue deserves special congratulations Thanks must go to Jenny Sharpe for the effort and time she put into coaching the BA and BB teams; Nancy Collins, and her "assistant" Lindy Nixon-Smith, who both worked hard in coaching the Crade 9 teams; Mrs. Pautine Harvey-Short, who led the C and D Grade teams through an undefeated season; Julie McMillan (whip includLd) who trained the A and B Grade teams intensively f or two weeks; the excellent coaches of the A and B G rade teaffis, Carolyn Somerville and Janelle DerringtoD, ?nd last, but definitely not least, the parents and other spectators, without whom the Netball season
wouldn't have that extra zing! Finally . . . Good luck in 1985!!!!
