The Concert Band was selected as one of the groups to tour north in the first week of the June holidays. We played to audiences of differing sizes at Caloundra, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Yeppoon, where all groups ad-libbed and Jessica had her debut at conducting. Despite weather problems and sea sickness the day on Keppel Island was fun. The following day we said goodbye to wonderful weather, Libby, Wendy, Flelen, and Sharon, and began our marathon fifteen hour trip home. On Sunday afternoon, September 4th, the auditorium was set for a Smorgasboard Reunion Dinner for past and present members and a concert by the band. It was a great opportunity to laugh over old photos, catch up on old friendships and all join in playing some of the old favourites. The advance in quality of perfornidnce and standard of music over the six years since its inception in 1978, was evident and can be attributed to the enthusiastic and musical leadership of our conductor Barry Warden' The full band played to a very responsive and appreciative crowd in the Queen Street Mall on Thursday l5th at 1.30 p.m. and 3.00 p.m. The sound was pleasing, and we received many personal congratulations from interested listeners. It was a pleasant way to finish Term. Finally, we would like to express our deep appreciation and thanks to Barry Warden for the five happy musical years which we have proudly spent in the B.G.G.S. Concert Band. We are sure that when we look back on our years at Grammar, we will count amongst our fondest memories our involvement in the Concert Band. Our very best wishes to you all for yet another successful year in 1984. Libby Lynch; Jessica Axelsen
CIRCT{ESTR.A The Orchestra has had a very successful and enjoyable year this year, although,we weren't quite as busy as last year performance-wise. Once again, auditions were held in February, due to the influx of grade 8's, and we ended up with a very large and strong string section, though unfortunately the brass section was low in numbers. Our high standard of previous years was maintained, however, and we played a great variety of works, performing at Recital Evenings, and School Day. Our Orchestra joined with the B.G.S. Orchestra at Music Camp, and the large group was able to tackle more demanding works, which everbody obviously enjoyed, thanks to Mr. May and Mr. Wakefield. All members of the Orchestra worked hard this year, with the help of tutorials by Mayne String Trio. But many thanks to our conductor, Mr. Wakefield, whose dedication, encouragement and enthusiasm made Orchestra so enjoyable and successful this year. Anita Chesmond
STRTNG ORCHESTRA String Orchestra this year was once again "offl in earnest with record attendances of twenty or more at each rehearsal. LJnder the watchful eye of Mrs. Sopinski, we braved the elements of the scratching, scraping and plucking of our stringed instruments. Although we didn't, unfortunately, play in the first music concert, we played in the second and it went off superbly(?). This was the first year we have had a full complement of violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. I-et's hope next year will be as successful as this. F.S. We'd love to have more violas, cellos and double basses - P-I--E-A-S-E. l-indy Nixon-Smith
