1982 BGGS Magazine
HOCKEY REPORT Once again the Hockey season began in late May, with trials, in order to select players for the 'A', '8' and 'C' grade teams. Unfortunately in 1982 the number of competing Hockey teams was reduced from five to three, and therefore there were a number of equally -·eager, yet disappointed, players . The majority of these girls elected to play club Hockey which is in its second year of existence at Grammar. Following the team selections a programme of arduous trainings followed, in order to attempt to clinch a hockey premiership as did the '81' team in 1981. The practices of the 'A' grade team were made particularly torturous, owing to the efforts of a bearded coach who will remain anonymous. Consequently the 'A' grade team members received constant sympathies from the remainder of the hockey players. All three of the Grammar teams thus were relatively successful throughout the season against the Q.G.S.S.S.A. schools, and were also fortunate enough to play matches against the New Zealand, Hamilton Girls' High School teams, which we billeted. Eleven girls from the 'A' and '8' grade teams also enjoyed a sporting trip to Townsville in the June / July holidays. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our coaches, Mr Maddern, Mr Robb, Mrs Yule and Mrs Carmie without whom the season would have been impossible. No doubt every player will enjoy the forthcoming hockey barbeque at the season's end. Good luck in 1983! Jenny Stewart (Hockey Captain).
NETBALL Overall an enjoyable and successful netball season. The A grade won 3 games and unfortuntely started playing well a little late in the season. The B grade captured the premiership being undefeated throughout the season - no doubt Pam Roger's excellent goaling average of 75% helped to keep playing spirits high. Persistance and hard training saw the 9 8's win their competition, also, winning all games and drawing one. The 9 A's never really realized their full potential, and went down in some hard fought games; both teams were coached by Nancy Collins, an old girl of the school. Our grade 8 teams played well with the A's coming third, and the 8 grade runners up, so we look forward to some strong senior teams in later years. And of course our "social team" who were led be Lyndy Nixon Smith. The team had an enjoyable season playing some tough competition and I'm sure benefited from the experience. Jenny Sharpe.
