ZEN DO KAI CLUB REPORT 1982 Hi, my name is Philip Hughes and I'm a Fifth Degree Black Belt from the Bob Jones Corporation. Over the last three years I have been instructing at B.G.G.S. and have enjoyed it immensely, but this year has been the best by far. We have over thirty girls training on and off (weather and study permitting) and all of them have progressed at least one belt level this year. To list them all and their individual achievements would be impossible but two girls in particular must be named; Sue Mason and Jenny Roberts. Both of these girls attempted and received their Black Belts earlier this year and in doing so broke a record. These girls are now the two youngest female Black Belts in Australia. This is quite an achievement for a club that looked like closing down due to lack of members last year. If the club keeps progressing as it has this year I foresee similar success in the future. I would just like to say I'm proud of all the girls for their efforts and take this opportunity to thank their parents and Mrs Hancock for their continued support. Yours in the Maria! BALLGAMES REPORT Ballgames is over for another year and gone is the sound of "Silence, pick up balls, go!" floating on the sweet fragrance of smelly sandshoes. Firstly, I must thank Tracey Tolcher, a 1980 B.G.G.S. graduate, for all her help in coaching and preparation this year. She faced us with a brave, although sometimes, exasperated face, I am sure it could not have been a success without her. Because of winter fixtures and the girls envolvement in the school community, we found ourselves with only three weeks of solid training. Fortunately, everyone was as enthusiastic as ever and we soon had teams organised. The 17 years team seemed to avoid this process, however, and this, coupled with two last minute ankle injuries, left us with a bare ten team members. This year the Q.G.S.S.S.A . Ballgames was held on the 18th September, at I.G.G.S. and for us, the day was a great success. After a somewhat shaky start, the team began to pull together. The most successful age group being the 17 years with four first places (including two records), a second and third. The final result was St Hilda's winning the cup and B.G.G.S . coming in second with a gap we intend to narrow in 1984. Well Grade 8s, that is what all the trainings were about. I hope you all enjoyed it. Congratulations to all for a magnificent effort. Good luck next year. Eat 'em alive! Kate Swindon (Captain) Special mention must be made of the effort Kate made during our short but effective season. The responsibility of the organization of training and coaching of the Grade 8 was shouldered by Kate willing and well. The results of her work were evidenced by our securing second place in the competition. Thank you for your enthusiasm, Kate. P.H.S.
