1981 School Magazine

B.G.G.S. - Athletics 1981 Training commenced in earnest at the start of second semester. This year is rather unique as we have so many specialized coaches to help us. Kym Moss must be thanked for the amount oltime, energy and enthusiasm she has given to all members of the squad' Also, sprint coaches, Malcolm Stanilorth and Lindy Roden, whose time and efforts have been appreciated by all. Once again we have been assisted by Mr. Small and Mr. Bowen in the middle/long distance and field events respectively. Their expertise is much appreciated. A small group ol devoted athletes trained for cross-country this year. We were then able to send a squad to compete in the Queensland State Secondary Schools cross-country Cham- pionships at Ipswich on Friday August the 7th. The girls, Nicola Hoey, Prue Willsford, Alison Tritton and Margaret Banllenjoyed themselves and performed well, finishing in the first half of a large field ol competitors from all over Queensland. Thanks must go to Mrs. Short and Kym Moss for transportation and organization on the day. In preparation for the Q.G.S.S.S.A. competition, which is to be held on Tuesday the 20th October, we participated in three major meets. Athletes' performance and participation at these events and regular attendance at training sessions are to be the principal requirement for position in the team. The first ol these events was an invitation alternoon meet organized by Villanova College. Despite having had only a few weeks ol training the squad's performance was good, and this gave the coaches an opportunity to see our new found "talent". On Saturday, the Sth of August, the squad competed in the Mount Gavatt Amateur Athletics Club event at Q.E.1l. Girls' Grammar was well represented and subsequently

dorninated the womens' divisions, to take out most of the places. The inter-house competition held at Churchie on the 2lst August, was our third major event. This year, as well as having an overall school champion, there were also age group champions. Results were:- Year Eight: Dimity Winders Year Nine: Sue Bruce Year Ten: Pam Rogers Year E.leven: Marg Bowen Year Twelve: Grainia King School Champion (shared by) : Dimity Winders Grainia King lliss Keely must be thanked for the smooth running of the day. With many weeks of preparation behind us, we hope for a most successful daY. Mrs. Short, this year, was responsible for the overall school organization and thanks must go to her for her encourage-
