ZenDo Kai Karate R.eport, 1981 This year has seen the return of Sensei Philip Hughes, the founder of the B.G.G.S. Zen Do Kai club in 1980, lrom a teaching position he held in Melbourne. During his absence we had been instructed by Sensei Shane Klees, a third dan, who also took self-defence classes as part ol E.E.A. Although sullering lrom a reduction in numbers due to various students finishing school, the club has none-the-less progressed undaunted. We have held two gradings at Gram- mar this year, and the club now has live girls who are three- quarters of the way to their black belts. The first grading was taken by Sensei Klees on the 30th ol March this year, and every girl who attempted it was successlul in achieving a higher rank. The new colours of our belts served both as a reward lor our training and an incentive to train harder. The second grading we attempted was held on the running track by Sensei Hughes on the 16th olseptember. It was the lirst grading tht several olour beginners had ever done, but we all passed and received the rank for which we had trained. The tournament scene has been quiet this year, after last year's victory over the club at Church ol England Grammar School. However the B.G.G.S. club has staged two very successlul demonstrations on the flag pole lawn. One was seen in the lunch-hour ol the 7th ol September, the other was on School Day at 2 pm. Our "demos" got several new girls in- terested in joining the club and also had some very positive reactions lrom the rest of the school. We were assisted in staging these by Sensei Hughes, Sempei Mike Peldon (an assistant instructor) and several other karate experts lrom the Bob Jones Corporation. On behall of the club. I would like to thank our instructors for their time and patience and to wish Philip all the very best lor his lourth dan grading in December. In the future we would like to see every girl training, as karate offers not only a uni- que sport, but an ideal way to get lit while learning to delend yourself"
