BASKETBALL REPORT 1980 This year is now the third year of basketball at Girls' Grammar with the number of teams and girls becoming interested rn the sport increasing ln 1978 we had one team and now, in 1980, we have six, with over one hun- dred girls involved. We are pleased to see that a lot of these girls are from the junior school, and now we can feel hopeful that they will be as successful as the senior teams have proved to be. There is still no G.P.S. competition for women's basket- ball, so we play in the junior division of the Brisbane Basketball Association. Three competitions are held dur- ing the year; one in each term. Each season all our teams are experiencing increasing success in their games. ln addition to this, Grrls' Grammar entered a team to compete in the Queensland Championships. The standard of competition was very high and we came a comfortable second, thrashing all teams except Wyn- num North, who managed to defeat us in the finals. As we have had only two and a half years experience, I think it was a very commendable effort. During this year we have been visited in our lunch hours by various American import players for mini coaching clinics. They gave us lots of hints and valuable advice on

how to try and improve our playing standard. These were very interesting and rewarding experiences. The high rate of success the teams have experienced is primarily due to the coaches - Mr. Rayner, head coach, Mr Warden; Mr. Hughes; and Mrs. Cameron. All coaches have put in long hours and many Saturdays. Their time and efforts are greatly appreciated. On behalf of all the girls, thank you. We also thank all the parents of the girls, who spent most of thejr Saturdays ferrying their daughters to the various games. We are also grateful for the parents' presence during the games as they are our main body of sup- porters. The senior girls who were the founders of the first Girls, Grammar basketball team in lg7B, would like to express their deepest thanks and appreciation to Mr. Rayner, who spent so much of his time teaching and coaching the girls who had had no previous experience what- soever. He not only taught us how to play the sport well, but he showed us how to enjoy it. Good luck to all those girls playing next season, and in future years, and keep on trying.
