1980 School Magazine
G.P.S. SWIMMING REPORT Two weeks prror to the completion of the Christmas holidays a dedicated swimming squad commenced what was to be a gruelling training program. With the aid of a few pre-G.P.S. carnivals, held by State High and St. Peters, and a series of chaotic time trials we came up with what we considered to be a frrst class team. We were not to be disappointed on the big day when our swimming team came a mighty third, giving a fine display of swimming and sportsmanship. Some of our success may be attributed to the fact that many B.G.G.S. studenis couldn't speak for a few weeks later. However, the bulk of our success was due not only to the efforts of the team, but also to the generous efforts of Mr. Emery and Mrs. Bendiech. Outstanding performance- were by Louise Paetzholt, Angela Wardrobe and the fantastic under 178 freestyle relay (1. Snelling, M. St. Baker, L. Bousted and Speedy Williams). Thanks must go to those who trained in the squad but didn't make the team. These people were just as impor- tant as the team members. Overall, Grammar displayed a tremendous amount of spirit anci enthusiasm which must be commended. On behalf of the 1980 team and particularly the senior members, I would like to wish Louiseand Mandy and the team next year the best of luck. Amanda Leeson (Swimmino Captain).
SWIMMING The girls G.P.S. Swimming Carnival was held this year on Saturday, March 1Sth. The meet was again dominated by State High but we all felt the team did very well to gain third place behind St. Margaret's. Our outstanding performances of the day came from Captain, Amanda Leeson, and cousins Louise Paetzholdt and Angela Wardrobe. The 178 f reestyle relay also per- formed well to win. We're sure everyone would agree that Mr Emery did a fine job in training and selecting the team. Judging by the enthusiastic cheerrng, led by our senior girls, the day was greatly enjoyed and there is certainly no doubt that all enjoyed themselves back at school afterwards. Next year we would like to see more girls at training and trying out for the team. We are sure Grammar will do much better if this is the case. The final placings were: B.S.H.S. - 414 St. Margaret's - 319 B.G.G.S. - 281 St. Peter's - 275 Somerville House - 256 St. Hilda's - 234 St. Aidan's - 216 l.G.G.S. - 145 Clayfield College - 104 We received f ive 1sts, f ive 2nds and nine 3rds. Amanda McLennan, Louise Paetzholdt. Swimming Vice-Captains.
