TLT Substantial is perhaps inadequate in describing the towering mountains of food which many Germans sup- posedly consume daily. Customarily the first meal of the day comprises crisp, f resh, milk rolls; renowned throughout the world as "Semmeln" which are served with butter, honey and a soft boiled egg; a pot of ccffee or tea accompanying this. ln Germany, however, one breakfast is insufficient in assuaging gnawing hunger pains until lunch time, so a second breakfast is served around 11 a.m.: a meal'which consists usually of hot sausages, potato salad (and a glass of beer) or thick slices of dark bread and cured ham (with small glasses of brandy). At noon it is time for the midday meal- Mit- tagessen. Mittagessen begins invariably with soup often made with noodles or dumplings and is followed by a roast served with potatoes and vegetables, or a hearty casserole dish or maybe sauerkraut (i.e. the German's own finely shredded, salted cabbage), with a variety of sausages. come 5 p.m. and the Germans are again ear- ing, this time coffee with cakes and tarts ' l'Kaffee mit Kuchen". The fifth and final meal of the day is Abend- brot; a simple cold meal of different kinds of bread, cold meats and sausages, various cheeses and beer. Anne Gauci,68. German food can be summarized in 3 words - plain, down-to-earth and substantial, or, expressed in German "gut bUrgerliche K0che"
