1978 School Magazine
To The Editor (or Whoever!) Upon being told by my mag. rep. that the Mag didn't want a story f rom the BASKETBALL TEAM, (which by the way is one of the better B.G.G.S. school teams), I decid- ed to take it upon myself to write a line or two (and it is being written during one of my thrilling science lessons, which goes to show how deeply hurt I was when I didn't see the word BASKETBALLI!l). Obviously you seem to have adopted an absurd idea that we are a bunch of old girls meeting on the tennis courts at the revolting hour of 7.30 p.m. every Wednesday and Friday mornings. And of course we can't leave out how we, and yes we the B.G.G.S. BASKETBALL TEAM (catch the large black letters), we risk having a tennis racket slammed into our heads just to get a little practice! Naturally I hope to wisen both the thoughts of the magazine staff and those who will read this article. There are two B.G.G.S. BASKETBALL TEAMS. The U17 (of which I am a member) and the U15 (the children)' The game itself is totally f rustrating and exhausting and a load of fun - where else can anyone meet a group of girls as fit as Olympic runners (koff, koff), as strong as steel and as accurate a goaler as the B.G.G.S. BASKET- BALL TEAM? (NO WHERE, that's where!). We are nearly through our second season and . . . well . . . have only won one game against the Gold Coast School, St. Hildas, but we are improving (l wish it would hurry upl!) Well that's about it. Amazing, for once I am not saying very much. But the most important thing I can say is a large THANK- YOU from all the girls to our COACH Mr. Rayner, who has managed to survive us for two seasons. But the important thing to tell you is that although we mightn't win any games just playing and knowing you're a member of the team is enough to make the B.G.G.S. BASKETBALL TEAM keep playing. But everyone please remember, you have a B.G.G.S. BASKETBALL team, we're not a iigment of your imagination! Keep Smiling See you round (like a basketball)
BALLGAMES REPORT 1978 This year the lnternational Ballgames competition was held on the 4th of August at lpswich Girls' Grammar School. All the Grammar teams had been training hard over the previous three to four weeks, and spirits, as wellas stan- dard*i.were high when the 'day' finally came. We had all been training under the experience of our coaches Miss White and Miss Harvey. As well as this, many of the grade twelve players had helped out with the training of the young teams. This I feel was most successful, in that we'all got to know a lot more girls, thus making us more of a leam, rather than five different age-groups. Upon arrival of lpswich, all teams went through some last minute practices (or at least tried to). We were all determined to improve on our 1977 results. Last:'ninute practice or not, the thirteen years File Gap event and the remainder of the afternoons program iollowed as such; Tunnel and Zig, Leader Ball, Medley Ball, Square Spry, and Captain Ball. The thirteen-years gained one second, two fourths and three fifth places. The fourteen-years gained two firsts, one second, third, fourth, and sixth places. The fifteen -years gained three seconds, a seventh, a third, and a fifth. Sixteen-years gained two firsts, a second, a third and a fourth, and finally the seventeens managed three fourths, a second, a sixth, and an eighth place. The total points gained f rom these positions tallied to 110 points giving us third place in the overall points tally. St. Hilda's were first on 125 points with State High second on 114 points. We had all per- formed extremely well including the f ifth formers who en- couraged the team in their vocal support. Our success was mainly due to the help and dedication of both our coaches Miss White and Miss Harvey and also to the team members (and supporters). Sue Gordon

CROSS COUNTRY A few more enthusiastic members of the school par- ticipated in training for the cross country team. We ran on the week-ends at various meets and the climax of the season was the State Secondary School Girls' Cross- Country Championships. Grammar fielded four teams and of these, three came second in the team awards. Next year we hope to find more girls interested in runn- ing cross-country.
