ORIENTEERING
-W"
Orienteering as a sport was established in Queensland 4 years ago and is gaining more and more support as the months go by as it is a sport from both the very young and the very old can enjoy. Basically it envolves map reading and compass work to find certain markers around a set course. Competitors first buy their maps, which they can study for as long as they wish to become familiar with the countryside. They also collect their clues and fill in a card, half of which is handed in at the start so that if you get lost the officials know you haven't returned and a search party may be organised. However fear not - there is rarely a need for this. Competitors then line up at the start and are given a time and f rom that moment on you're against the clock, You copy the course onto your map and then set off. lf you wish to do wellyou have to run, although you are put in grades (A, B, C, D, or E), to sult your ability and of course you don't have 1o run if you don't want to. Orienteering has just started as an interest at Grammar this year. An interschool corlpetition was held at Leslie Dam in July and Suzanne Strother of 3rd form gained third place in her grade. Later, towards the end of September, an orienteering day was held at Bunyaville State Forest. About twenty people came including Mums and Baby Sisters and all had an enjoyable and very pro- fitable day. An orienteering unit is also being included in the last E.E.A. unit. lt is hoped that from all this activity that enough interest will be activated in the formation of an orienteering club in the near future. Our thanks go to the Johnstons for their help with activities this year. J. Pillow

GYMNASTICS This year, the i/lterschool gymnastics competition was held on Saturday October 14, in the rather cramped gym- nasium at St. Margaret's . . . . Until this date all girls consistently and enthusiastically trained under the excellent guidance of our new coach,Wendy Bryant. Despite trying conditions with regards to unsatisfactory equipment, B.G.G.S's teams all performed extremely well with our A,B, & C teams winning their grades. D1 finishing second and D2 - fourth. Rebecca Fielding competed well to win overall in C Grade - Congratulations Becky ! 1978 saw the first Rhythmic gymnastics competition ever held on an interschool level. We entered teams in both sections, which were Ribbon and Ball, and came 3rd and 4th respectively. Our thanks go to Gretel Bakker Who cheerfully accepted the difficult task of training the girls. Thanks also to Clare Beveridge for her organization and enthusiasm. Congratulations everyone and good luck for next year!
