STARS
M any BGGS students would agree that capturing our very own images of colourful nebulas and swirling galaxies is a highlight of Junior Science. As we learn how to use the Dorothy Hill Observatory’s telescopes and process our images, the abstract world of astronomy suddenly seems a little less mystical, and more like something that we can engage with tangibly. For senior students who find astronomy particularly intriguing, the Student-Teacher Astronomy Research Symposium (STARS) invites us to develop our skills even further through using the School’s telescopes to conduct research into fascinating topics such as double stars and exoplanets. As we work through our STARS projects, we learn more about stars and planets, ingenious astrometric techniques, and scientific report writing—while knowing that our findings will eventually contribute to the greater scientific community. This year, we are excited to have submitted a research paper to the Journal of Double Star Observations, a peer-reviewed journal for student and amateur astronomers.
Now, beyond just learning about astronomy, we can also say that we have directly contributed to the knowledge base that will lead astronomers, both current and future, towards even greater discoveries. Madison Danalis (12W), Freya Murcott-Green (12M), and Kiara Packard (12G)
TEXTILE INNOVATIONS CLUB
T extile Innovations Club is a co-curricular club aiming to promote ‘slow fashion’ and encourage BGGS students to experiment with different styles of producing textiles. I joined Textiles Club during its start-up in 2021 because I was interested in the sewing experience of our coordinator, Mrs Thomas, and I wanted to eventually create my own clothing items. This year, we have had up to 40 students at a time creating their own textiles using our new state of the art Bernina sewing machines, overlocking machine, and various other equipment. With Mrs Thomas’ extensive expertise and love of textiles, as well as some guest teachers with their own unique textiles experience, our club has grown and accumulated members across all Year levels who have the curiosity to come and learn and create, no matter their experience levels. Small projects and sharing of skills have included: crochet; place mats from Dad’s old work shirts; and more recently boxer shorts from flannelette sheets! Milena Saina (11O) CAPTAIN
