MATHS RETROSPECTIVE
T he Junior Maths classroom is a collaborative and friendly learning environment. In particular, the students mentioned their love for group work as well as the encouragement, kindness, and patience from their teachers. One student expressed her gratitude that her teacher is ready to help even if it means explaining everything again—‘the teachers want us to understand’. Throughout the year, some of the highlights mentioned were writing on white boards, engagement in group activities, and the many maths competitions that are offered here at School. Overall, the Junior classroom is a positive and welcoming environment where students are encouraged to learn and grow at their own pace.
At the end of Year 9, students decide between taking General Maths and Maths Methods as they begin their transition into Senior Mathematics. Then, at the end of Year 10, girls are given the opportunity to also select Specialist Maths. In the Senior Mathematical Methods course, girls were exposed to calculus for the first time, honed their skills in trigonometry, and explored complex probability. Specialist students delved deeper into applications of integration and were also able to transfer their knowledge from Methods into the probability topic to finish off the year. General Mathematics is catered towards various types of students. As all senior subjects are jam-packed with content, ‘Genny’s’ stimulating and steady pace allows students to slow down and grasp each useful ‘real world’ topic such as finance and networks before moving onto the next. The special part about Maths is the feeling of satisfaction when you get a question right. It is a motivator not to give up, to keep trying to solve that one seemingly impossible problem, to keep challenging yourself. Not only this, but Maths develops your logical reasoning, problem-solving and thorough checking skills, helping you to resolve daily dilemmas and real-world problems.
