2022 School Magazine

STEPtember D uring September, BGGS participated in STEPtember, an initiative of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. STEPtember supports life-changing research, treatment, and services to help people with cerebral palsy live their best life. Throughout the month of September, each team logged steps to raise money for this amazing charity. The initiative also allowed the girls to come up with creative team names such as Nil Sine La-Steppay, The Steppa Pigs and Holy Walkamoly. Girls took advantage of the fact that all sporting activities, from Athletics to Netball, count towards steps, so it is no surprise that so many steps were completed. Overall, 252 members of the BGGS community signed up, contributing to 83 teams. A total of 29 522 630 steps were taken in the 30 days and $6450 was raised. ‘Knowing the money being raised is helping thousands of people with cerebral palsy, motivates me to try and make a difference, even if it’s small.’— Claire Agnew (10L) The top stepper was Angel Su (7E), completing 521 341 steps, and the top fundraiser was Isabella Kim (10L), who raised $640. KIRSTEN JACK MEMORIAL LEUKAEMIA COMMITTEE

T he Kirsten Jack Memorial Leukaemia Committee (KJLMC) was established in 1978 in honour of Year 11 student, Kirsten Jack, who sadly passed away in 1977 from leukaemia. The committee is made up of girls from Years 7 to 12 who are dedicated to supporting young people with cancer. Our primary objectives are raising awareness, encouraging involvement within the School, and raising funds to support families dealing with cancer and continue research. We started the year off with a very successful Years 7 and 8 ‘come and try’ meeting to encourage new members to start their Service journey. We also held our Mother’s Day raffle and card selling in Term 1, and the highly anticipated annual KJ Formal Fashion Parade in Term 2. Unfortunately, with the cancellation of Open Day, we were unable to sell our ever-popular Rocky Road, but we thought on our feet and introduced our ‘Can you Bear it’ initiative which encouraged girls to write what bravery means to them on origami bears folded by the KJ girls. We finished the year off strong with Daffodil Day and Bandanna Day. Both days were a big hit. We sold out of our beautiful Daffodil Day pins and bandannas and included our Bravery Bears in an installation. This year we worked to support the following organisations and initiatives: Canteen; Cancer Council; The Bravery Box; and The Ellie Project. KJ would not be able to run so easily without all the effort and time Miss Parry and Ms Holden, our amazing coordinators, put in to ensure our meetings and stalls are organised.
