COFFEE BRIGADE

T hroughout 2022, Uralla has raised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements, heritage, and history. Major events discussed, celebrated, and commemorated this year include Mabo Day, National Sorry Day, National Close the Gap Day, NAIDOC week, National Reconciliation Week, and National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. This was done in a range of different ways, including a screening of Take Heart: Deadly Heart , creating posters celebrating NAIDOC week award winners and influential Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, informative displays, and the introduction of the first BGGS Sorry Book. We also spread awareness about the significance of Reconciliation Action Plans and our School has started to develop ours this year. In addition to these events, we also had a guest presenter sharing knowledge and experience. Didjeribone player, Tjupurru, shared a unique and engaging blend of Indigenous and electronic music with the Uralla Club. He also explained the importance of preserving Indigenous culture, and some of the prejudices and challenges he has been confronted with as an Indigenous Australian throughout his career. His interactive performance had students considering new ideas and different perspectives—critical to gaining a deeper understanding of our local and broader community and culture. awareness about contemporary cultural issues in Australia, and celebrated T he Coffee Brigade (CB) is a not-for-profit organisation that advocates and supports people in the Brisbane community who are hungry and experiencing homelessness by distributing nourishing breakfasts, warm coffee, and other essential food items. The generous donations, accompanied by the kind-hearted volunteers, allow for the CB to continue to help those in need. For two weeks in Term 1, BGGS held a food drive where students donated a large number of food essentials to the CB including long life milk, soup, noodles, and baked beans. As well as the donations, Year 11 and 12 students donated their time two mornings a term to make sandwiches at the CB kitchen, that were later distributed to those in need around Brisbane. Every volunteer opportunity throughout the year was met with an overwhelming amount of interest from the students who wanted to support the organisation in a hands-on way.

I would like to thank everyone this year who has been involved either by volunteering to make sandwiches or donating essential foods and the coordinators, Ms Young and Ms McDonnell, for their unwavering support and dedication this year. Everyone’s generosity has made a significant impact on the Brisbane community.

URALLA CLUB

In 2022, Uralla hosted the BGGS Diversity Day Forum, where inspiring BGGS staff from diverse backgrounds shared their experiences of emigrating to Australia. Many students and staff attended the forum, and it proved to be an enlightening, engaging, and thought-provoking recognition of diversity in our community. Sound advice was given to students, encouraging them to embrace their futures with courage, connection, and an open mind.

We would like to thank the group’s coordinators, Ms Garson and Ms Hills, for their support, and wish all the best for the Uralla Club in 2023. Simran Mackrani (12H) and Ella Sinclair (12G)
