Earlier in the season, our fencers also had the opportunity to participate in an Olympics Unleashed session, where Olympians, Zac Stubblety-Cook and Ria Thompson, provided advice about motivation, time management, and the importance of a strong work ethic. The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, also spoke about goal setting in preparation for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Many of our fencers also competed individually at the Queensland Fencing State Championships. Eight of these fencers, Erin McNab (11B), Neve McNab (9B), FENCING
T his year, 16 teams from BGGS competed in the Queensland Schools’ Team Fencing Competition, against teams from All Hallows, Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane State High School, and Composite. Overall, the BGGS Fencing team placed second, with four individual teams placing first, two placing second, and two placing third. These results were outstanding, making 2022 one of our most successful seasons. Fencing is one of the fasted combat sports. As the only sport at BGGS where athletes compete equally, regardless of gender, Fencing provides a unique challenge that combines both mental and physical agility.
Isla McNab (7B), Kayla Tin (7M), Caitlin Brough (12W), Olivia Stanton (10H), Ambre Khosrotehrani (8W), and Eowyn Wong (9G), also represented Queensland, at the Australian Fencing Championships in Sydney at the end of the season. Neve McNab placed third in the Australian U17 Foil Championships. Neve McNab, Isla McNab and Eowyn Wong placed third at the U15 Foil Australian Teams Championships as part of the Queensland team. Kayla Tin placed second at the U15 Australian Sabre Championships, and third at the U17 Australian Sabre Teams Championships as part of the Queensland team. Erin McNab (11B) CAPTAIN

Congratulations must also go to four of our BGGS footballers, who were selected in the Under 15 Metropolitan North representative team: Alyssa Borodin (10W); Amelie Jury (9W); Kajal Mistry (10O); and Ava Spencer (9B). What an excellent achievement! Our main goal this year was to ensure that each girl felt like they were a part of the Football family. Although this season was cut short, we hope that all players were able to improve their Football skills, form new friendships, and bond with girls from different Year levels.
D uring the 2022 Football season, four of the nine QGSSSA rounds were abandoned, requiring all students to show their perseverance and determination. Nevertheless, training sessions, often in modified format and locations, continued week-in week-out with terrific results from the few games that were played. This year our Football community grew with six teams training each week, four of which were entered into the QGSSSA competition. While adjusting to flooding and flood damaged fields, all four teams are to be commended on achieving a top five result on
A massive thank you must go to our wonderful coordinator, Mrs Finch, for all the hard work, organisation, and passion you put into Football at the School. Your dedication did not go unnoticed this year, particularly with the additional organising required, with limited fields available, including Rangakarra. Thank you also to all the coaches and parents who have supported the girls throughout this unpredictable season. We are incredibly proud of the girls’ continued commitment and determination during the season, and we are confident that the 2023 Football season, and beyond, is looking strong.
