YEAR 7 INTERHOUSE MATHS QUIZ
I n May, all nine House Groups competed in the Year 7 Interhouse Maths Quiz to win the grand prize of a basket of chocolates and their name engraved on the trophy. The competition consisted of five rounds. These rounds included Speed, Estimation, Individual Short Answer, General Knowledge, and Trivia. The competition began with Speed. This round consisted of 12 questions to be answered within two minutes. Next was the Estimation Round. One of the more difficult questions involved guessing the number of tennis balls in a jar. This was followed by the Individual Short Answer Round. Three questions were given to each team, to be answered individually by the three contestants. In the General Knowledge Round, our knowledge of maths and mathematical terms were tested to the limit. There were 10 challenging questions and not one team scored 100 per cent! The competition concluded with the Trivia Round which had 20 questions covering a wide range of mathematical concepts and challenges. Competition was fierce, with O’Connor leading in the first half, but Lilley taking home the win! All in all, it was a super fun competition, that we hope the Year 7 students of 2023 enjoy just as much as we did. Mary O’Brien (7L) and Isabel Huang (7L)

YEAR 8 MATHS TEAM CHALLENGE T he Year 8 Maths Team Challenge took place in February. Students met on the pool deck for an afternoon tea, kindly provided by the Maths Department. We then headed up to G block, where the
competition was held. Teams consisted of between four and six members, competing for the win. The competition included three rounds. The first, being the relay, where the teams were split in half to solve a series of challenging maths problems. Next, the team members joined to answer even more exciting questions. Then, came the much-anticipated trivia round which we all enjoyed. Our favourite part of the occasion was the ability to challenge ourselves while still having fun. A big thanks must go to the Maths staff who organised this enjoyable event. The Year 8 Maths Team Challenge was a great way to wake up our sluggish holiday brains
and set us up for a great academic year! Alicia Cheng (8W) and Cindy Zhang (8L)
MATHAPATTA
T erm 2 saw the arrival of the much-anticipated Maths camp for Year 9 and 10 students, Mathapatta. Unfortunately, due to heavy flooding, we were unable to travel to Marrapatta, instead attending a day camp at our very own Spring Hill campus. The day was packed with interesting workshops and challenges in which we explored different aspects of Mathematics, while collaborating with, and competing against, our peers. A highlight of the day was Dr Jenkins’ game theory workshop, where we bet on high-stakes scissors paper-rock, auctioned a $50 note, and analysed the maths behind social deduction games. Another fan-favourite was Mrs Smith’s practical workshop, in which we experimented with binoculars, built our own telescopes and tested them out around the School. We concluded the day with a trivia competition, which put our general knowledge, teamwork, and competitive spirit to the test. We’d like to thank the Maths Department for organising this amazing experience and encourage Year 9 and 10 girls who are interested in Maths to attend Mathapatta in the years to come.
