Mrs McDonald, B.Sc., Dip.Ed. M.A.C.E. was the first Headmistress with a Science degree. She came to the School as Science Mistress in 1940 and was appointed Headmistress in 1952 following Miss Lilley’s retirement. It was during her time as Headmistress that the education system changed from external exams administered by The University of Queensland to one of internal assessment. As a result McDonald was much freer to explore and develop new ways of leading the School both in terms of curriculum and co-curricular programme. Dr Hirschfeld, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said of her: Mrs McDonald throughout has pursued her ideal of a ‘school with a good tone as being a community of good citizens, each member identifying herself with the community, accepting its discipline, working for its welfare and sharing its joys and sorrows.
