The Beanland Memorial Library

The Beanland Memorial Library: Code of behaviour for academic staff The library offers assistance and instruction to all users (individually and in groups) in the location, acquisition, evaluation, and purposeful use of information and resources. Library staff members take pride in the provision of relevant resources, chosen especially for your teaching requirements. We also enjoy “valuing adding” by providing efficient access, notes and subject headings, specialist training, research advice and collaboration on skill development, units of work, activities, and assessment tasks. We take special pride in the development of AskClio resources for specific units of work, assessment tasks, wider reading activities, individual lessons, etc. However, there are certain protocols that may require clarification. The library staff would never presume to enter individual classrooms and advise teachers about classroom management. However, the open plan design of the library spaces presents certain responsibilities. Regular lessons should occur in classrooms. Students should be alerted to the time and location of a lesson in a library space before they arrive at the library. Some specialised activities like library orientation, wide reading promotions, AskClio resources, and research skill development taken by the teacher librarians and librarians are the exception, as the students need to be introduced to the resources and services in situ. Staff are responsible for the marking of class rolls; therefore, they should accompany their classes and supervise student behaviour. The aim is to maintain the good order of the library, the encouragement of purposeful activity, the care of resources, a respect for the rights of all users, and the maintenance of quiet working conditions at all times. During class time, small groups of students without an accompanying staff member may be sent to the library to complete reference work and to access resources. They should bring written or emailed signed notification from the teacher , stating the names of the students and the reason for the unsupervised library visit. Group tables in the library generally seat four students and, if students are set co- operative tasks, groups should be no larger than will fit at tables without moving chairs. There are different spaces that provide tables for larger groups.

Users must always leave the library in good order, especially in terms of an absence of litter and the neat arrangement of furniture. Students are NOT expected to re-shelve items. Books are placed neatly on the reshelving trolley or the subject specific trolleys, spine uppermost with the spine label closest to the student. Teachers are asked to help supervise students’ access to the shelves and the tidy placement of resources in the appropriate place at the end of the lesson. Students should bring into the library minimum equipment required to promote safe movement within the spaces. For safety reasons, no item must be left in the foyer and all items brought into the library must be placed on or under tables or benches. Larger musical instruments may be stored behind the entrance end of the circulation desk. No food or drink , other than water in sealed containers, is to be consumed in the library at any time . The only students permitted to access the lift are those with lift passes or fobs. These are issued only by the Health Centre staff . Girls with fobs do not require staff to access the lift for them. Girls with passes must ask a library or other staff member to access the lift. The only person to use the lift is the particular girl with permission. If the student is so incapacitated that she cannot carry her laptop etc., one person is allowed to assist her.

Supervising teachers are to ensure that the students in their care adhere to the codes of behaviour.
