Standdown

The Beanland Memorial Library Code of behaviour: library use during tests, standdown, spares, and independent study units.

This policy is to inform students and staff of the specific conditions of library usage during lesson times when students may be in the library without specific teaching staff supervision. All library users will be informed of these special conditions, which also apply before school, during lunchtime, and on senior school assessment days. This code of behaviour applies specifically to 1. standdown [that period when students are excused from regular classes in order to prepare for and complete assessment]; o All regular conditions apply, including the requirement that bags are kept in lockers until 3.10pm, not outside the library doors. o No student is to bring a school bag into the library before 3.10pm . o No food is to be brought into the library – EVER - and most drinks are also excluded. Water bottles with lids are permitted. o Students disturbing other users will be asked to leave. o Library staff are not responsible for personal belongings left in the library. If students want to leave their belongings in the library, they must be arranged neatly and placed out of the way on a bench in case the area has been booked by a class. o Students who require library resources for study during standdown may use any area of the library but must work quietly and productively. Regular class bookings take precedence over students on standdown. Students may book the booths on Level 1 but not for the whole day. Standdown bookings may be made for one or two lessons and made in advance. 2. spares [those lessons when students who undertake a reduced timetable have no scheduled classes] o Students with spares must use the library as a study venue. o They must work independently and in silence. o It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that her name is marked present on the roll by personally contacting the library staff member rostered on the circulation desk.

o Individual programs are overseen by the Heads of House but library staff will record attendance electronically on Teacher Kiosk. o The library caters for casual library lessons for students. These students, NOT on the electronic rolls, will sign in at the desk manually. 3. independent study units [units of work in specific subject areas that may be undertaken outside the classroom without immediate teacher supervision]. o Bookings for spaces must be made in advance. o An email or note from the regular teacher will be provided. o Students must sign in at the attendance book at the circulation desk. 4. holiday users [both casual visits from students from all levels and Year 12 study sessions in the September holidays] o Uniforms do not have to be worn. o Carry bags are permitted, not large school bags which should be kept in lockers. o All food and drink [other than water in a sealed container] is to be consumed OUTSIDE the library. In addition, and in accordance with library policy, unsupervised individual or small groups of students who wish to use the library during class time must bring written notification from their supervising teacher which will be stapled in the attendance book. If these students fail to work profitably and quietly, they will be asked to return to their class.
