Science and Engineering Challenge This year, thirty Maths students participated in the Science and Engineering Challenge at The University of Queensland Participants compete against other schools to design, construct and test machines to see whose 15 the most effective. The challenges give the students a taste of what a career in engineering or science might be like. One of the challenges, Escape from the Lost World, required the girls to construct a lightweight flying craft using helium balloons, balsa wood, and motorised propellers, then navigate it around a course in the fastest time possible This activity required students to consider the placement of the engines as well as the direction of their aircraft as controlled by the motors. The highlight of the day for the Grammar girls was Puff Puff Golf. The activity was about building a car with a

deflating balloon as the only source of propulsion. The car had to travel in a straight line and the car which travels the longest distance wins. One of our team's car travelled the maximum distance possible, then completed the extra challenges, requiring the car to drive into a 'hole' in the least number of 'shots', hence the golf aspect of the challenge. As a result of their great design, the girls won the event by a very large margin. Girls Grammar placing 3rd overall, and the girls had a fun and exciting day designing their machines

Barbie is a Monster Math puns are the first 'sine' of madness. This was what our maths teacher told us one day, who wears glasses to improve 'division' ... ok, enough of the maths puns. .. It was amazing to the class of 8W when their maths teacher, Mr Lanning, walked into the classroom with a full box of Barbie dolls in his arms Mr Lanning is yet to tell the class where he got them. The point of this Barbie-filled box was ratio and to prove that Barbie is a Monster. We were to enlarge a small doll Into a life size (165cm) person on paper. We had to measure and enlarge each part of the dolls body, to be able to draw a picture of a real life Barbie When checking the proportions, we all found out that a life-size Barbie would have extremely long legs and tiny feet. The quote from the Barbie fun fact sheet "Barbie would have to crawl on her knees to support her top-heavy frame", summarised Barbie's out of proportion body ,*..,.. ... mummyMilli1111/4/11 . . J

71' Dog Pi Dayis observed on March 14 because of the date's representation as month/day 15 3/14. This adheres to the commonly used approximation of 3.14 for Pi (0). The Year 9 students celebrated Pi Day with an interclass mathematics quiz Students had an individual round of multiple choice questions followed by two rounds of team questions. The winning teams were announced at Year 9 assembly and were awarded blocks of chocolate for their success. The quiz was to celebrate maths and to generally have a good time where students challenged themselves with difficult maths problems Pi day started off with a movie about the history of 7T and how the number changed with time. Then we worked in teams to solve puzzles and problems using our mathematical skills. Pi day gave everyone a greater understanding for Pi and a new love for the I love Pi stickers that were handed out when we got a problem right. NATALIA GULBRANSEN D/AZ (SW)
