GERMAN Deutsch at Brisbane Girls Grammar School always has an enthusiastic atmosphere with many keen to explore. This year, Deutsch has turned to a whole new aspect: grammar. Learning Deutsch grammar has taken some time to adapt to, but with the caring, helpful, first-class teachers, it has become much easier, as these teachers have shown us the similarities between English and Deutsch grammar, and quite frankly, the grammar between these languages is very similar. Deutsch ist sehr wunderbar und macht Spaß! Danke Frau Kiolle, Frau Barker und Frau Garson! Danke! HILLARY BUI (9E) Girls Grammar has invited us to taste, feel and experience the love of languages. German has provided us with the ability to learn and grow in a culturally enriching fashion. This year we have been introduced to lots of different topics through the German language, allowing us to increase our opportunities in life in a fun and enjoyable way. Our teacher, Frau Kiolle has been supportive in our inspiring journey. Deutsch ist fantastisch! LUCY WITTMANN (9M) AND JESSICA BROWN (9L)

FRENCH RENÉE KEY (12W) Senior French is a rewarding, yet challenging subject that opens the door to another culture. Not only do we study the structure and intricate grammar of the language, but we also discuss the different culture and life in France. This year, we have studied modern technology in France with emphasis on social media, the environment and the effects of pollution, and the schooling system in France. In each topic we learnt a wide range of vocabulary and gained a unique understanding of the ‘French way of life’. With our two senior French classes timetabled on the same line, there are also opportunities to come together as one class and enjoy some collective group learning and sharing of language. Learning French at BGGS is not just confined within a classroom. Each year, an excited group of girls spend two weeks at our French affiliate school, Lycée Saint Paul, where they experience school and life in France. Our French friends stay for two weeks at BGGS in February. ■ GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL ZOE KECK (11M) In March, Year 9 and 10 students studying German went on an excursion to celebrate the German Film Festival. This festival showcases a selection of Germany’s award-winning, internationally acclaimed movies to Australian cities and towns. We travelled by bus to Palace Cinemas on James Street, where we watched Hanni und Nanni 2 . The movie was about two twins in boarding school and their experiences when a boys’ school arrives to participate in their play. By listening to the language, we were able to learn more German vocabulary and hear the things we learn in class, be spoken in context. ■

GERMAN TASTE OF UNI ELIZABETH TRUSLER (11L) In May, ten lucky German students had a taste of German at The University of Queensland. Alongside four other schools, we listened to the Head of German at UQ explain the opportunities offered by the Language Department. We learnt about various career paths, the electives that can be chosen such as philosophy or films, and the amazing trips to German universities where one can be fully immersed in German language and culture. Afterwards, we did some activities involving the different dialects of German as well as watching a snippet of a German film without the audio, where it was up to us to fill in what would have been said. There were some very funny outcomes. The afternoon was finished off with some delicious pretzels and gingerbread as we shared our thoughts on the courses with the other school students. The event at UQ was very insightful and all of us will definitely consider it in the near future. ■
