FROM THE STUDENTS Senior Drama Production

My role in the play is Chuck—a kind-hearted teenager, who helps Agnes by guiding her through Tilly’s D&D module, and introduces her to Tilly’s other real-life friends. As a character, Chuck means a lot to me, because he’s caring, wholeheartedly devoted to D&D, and really funny. I wanted to be in this production because it’s an exciting experience—not only do you make new friends and have lots of fun, but you also experience an overwhelming sense of accomplishment when you realise you and your team have created something amazing, and you get to share it with an audience. I love Drama because it is the perfect outlet for creativity and individuality, and you can interpret and connect with characters in your own unique way. When I read Qui Nguyen’s script, I had a vivid image of what it would look like on stage, but what is amazing is that everyone’s vision of the play coming to life is different. Wonderfully, we all have had the opportunity to collaborate and pitch ideas to our Director, so we’re making something that is a representation of the whole cast’s vision. Participating in School productions is such a worthwhile experience. You learn and build on your skills, and in this most recent play I’ve also learned from our Director to challenge myself—to make offers and do what feels right in a scene without needing specific direction. Every Director takes a different approach with a production, but the one constant is that you are treated like a professional actor and are trusted with important character decisions and ideas. Although contributing to the production of an entire play is hard work, it is never tiresome because the friendships you develop with your cast members keep you energised, and it’s an incredible feeling to see the play come together. For anyone curious about continuing to study Drama or joining a production in the future, I would encourage them to give it a go. School productions are so beneficial, as they foster confidence, improve social skills, help you to harness your creativity and teach you to think ‘outside the box’.

The 2023 Senior Drama Production, She Kills Monsters, is a fantastical, heart-wrenching play that switches between the real world and the world of Dungeons and Dragons (known by game fans as, ‘D&D’). The protagonist is a young adult, Agnes. She wants to learn more about her younger sister, Tilly, who died tragically in a car accident along with their parents. Not familiar with D&D herself, Agnes enlists the help of Tilly’s friend Chuck—a nerdy D&D expert and ‘Dungeon Master’—to help her navigate the game Tilly created in a bid to get to know her sister better. Backed by a powerful team of companions, Agnes embarks on a quest for Tilly’s lost soul, fighting all sorts of monsters along the way.
