WERNER-HEISENBERG GYMNASIUM, GERMANY
In October this year, students and staff from our German affiliate school, located north of Munich, will reconnect with BGGS families after a three-year COVID hiatus. Werner Heisenberg Gymnasium was founded in 1707 as a Latin school with a strong focus on academic achievements. Our affiliate school relationship with Werner Heisenberg Gymnasium was established in 2014 by Ms Susan Garson when she was the Director of International Studies. In October, our guests from Germany will live with our friendly host families, attend classes at Girls Grammar and participate in excursions to explore various sites in Queensland. Through this authentic learning opportunity, students from both schools will interact with their peers by putting their language skills to practice in a real-world setting. LYCÉE SAINT PAUL, FRANCE Our Affiliate School relationship with Lycée Saint Paul was established in 1990 by Ms Lorraine Thornquist when she was the Director of International Studies. Lycée Saint Paul is a private academically-focused school located in Angoulême, southwest of Paris. This long-standing affiliation has created many lifelong friendships between families in Australia and France. We look forward to resuming our exchange visits with Lycée Saint Paul from 2024.
MIE HIGH SCHOOL, JAPAN In 1988, Mrs Lorraine Thornquist worked with one of her staff, Mrs Wendy Campbell, to establish our Affiliate School relationship with Matsusaka Girls High School which is located on Honshu, the largest main island of Japan. This school is part of the education foundation owned and directed by Professor Umemura. Matsusaka Girls High later became co‑educational in the 1990s and is now Mie High School. We are currently exploring options to resume our exchange with Mie High in 2024. SHANGHAI NO. 3 GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL, CHINA Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ High School is one of the leading academic schools in Shanghai, China. The School’s motto is: Independence, Ability, Care and Elegance. In 2014, Principal, Ms Euler Welsh, visited Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ High School to highlight the success of the exchange program. Ms Euler Welsh also delivered an inspiring online speech to congratulate Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ High School on its 130 th anniversary in 2022.

Our International Affiliate Schools program offers rich and diverse educational and intercultural experiences for our students. Over the years, many lifelong connections and friendships have been made across the world. It is through these authentic, real-life experiences that students extend their language learning and global citizenship skills beyond the School and Australia. We look forward to many future opportunities to strengthen our engagement with our affiliate schools—helping to better prepare our students for our global future in a rapidly changing world.
