MORNING CITY
EVENING CITY Velvet darkness hides the grey shroud, Now the city proudly bares herself In all her carefi-ee glitter. Glitter of wet metal - Brightness of neon flashing - But where is the freshness? Blueness of cigarette smoke, Greenness of traffic lights, Gold of car headlamps. But where, where is the freshness? The upstretched hands of gum and ironbark and bottlebrush. Welcome darkness, not to be hardened with glitter. Stars and moon or shadow-casting clouds No roar or screech or chilling human scream - But crack and rustle, noise of hunted - then perfect stillness This cool soft virgin In robes of peace. This cold bright hag In black velvet ... Black velvet softly touches
Grey grey cloud Choking the trees and the people.. A grey train clacks along Through the grey valley. Transports, cement mixers, Garbage trucks, businessmen . Roar through the grey smoke Into the greyer city. I pity them The grey faces. Roaring from the grey cloud Into the grey smoke. Knowing not Blueness of a bush morning Freshness of a bush morning Brightness ... Knowing not Greenness of the tomato plants Greenness of the morning sea Greenness . . . Knowing not Gold of sun on sand Gold of dry grass Gold ... Knowing not.
