MANY of us, on the day of the first atomic explosion at Woomera, felt like men standing by the edge of a huge saucer, whose rim is just too high for us to reach with our eyes. It seems that these tremendous advances in atomic science must quickly mean for mankind, either appalling calam- ity or an age of wonderful progress. Never before has an efficient crystal ball been so entrap_cingly desirable and at the same time so unprocurable. Although it is hard to be pessimistic, we must adopt some serious attitude towards the potential elixir and poison. Surely far greater wisdom and integrity than statesmen have ever shown is needed in those who control it. It is wrong to think that we can do little. Very soon, both as voters and in our own sphere of influence, be it home, office or classroom, we too may wield great 'power. Now, more than ever, it is imperative to prepare to do so with courage, intelligence and knowledge.
