'l'HE BLACKOUT.

It is a strange fact about human nature, but nevertheless one which is quite understandable, that the events in our daily lives are taken as a matter of course, and it is only when our routine has been rudely shattered, that we fully appreciate how much a part of us they really are. And so in the present crisis in England when the fa te of Nations hangs in the balance, it is probably the lack of their everyday comforts and the things they. are used to seeing, which cause the g reatest pain in the heort of every Londoner. Chief among these, surely, is the nightly black-mit. What a sacrifice it must be to these people to dim the bright lights o:f their city, and walk through their streets unfamiliar in the blackness and swarming with a million men and women a ll groping in the dark, and trying, sometimes hopelessly, to find the way to their homes. Yet these brave souls gladly extin- guish their friendly city lights, so that another and greater· light may burn _forever. D.H.- C.V.
