FRENCH
In Year 9 French this year, we were immersed in everyday French language and culture. Term I began with the visiting French students from our Sister School, Lycée St Paul in Angoulême. It was really interesting to hear about their lives in France and to practice our French with native French speakers. We celebrated Mardi Gras with traditional French crêpes and ‘La Chandeleur’ by flipping our crêpes while holding a gold coin for good luck. We had a lot of fun making our videos introducing our school in French. This year we have studied the topics of shopping and cafés and even had an Orangina taste testing! BRIDGETTE WATKINS (9R)
LATIN
Latin at Brisbane Girls Grammar School is incredibly interesting and a joy to learn. While you still have to learn your verb endings like any language subject, you also get to dive into the lives of ancient Romans and immerse yourself into their lifestyle. Through Junior Latin, you get invested in the story of Quintus Horatius who grows up to be the famous poet Horace and watch him through his many adventures. Now studying Senior Latin, I’ve enjoyed learning about the Roman Empire, through reading texts by ancient writers Cicero and Tacitus. Additionally, we had the pleasure of attending an excursion at the Antiquities Museum. It was incredible to see artefacts that would have been used in the Roman era. The mixture of learning about classical literature, the Greek and Roman gods, and the line of emperors through the early common era, makes studying Latin a unique and great experience. GERMAN
Year 10 German this year has been a challenging yet extremely enjoyable experience where we have built on skills developed in Year 8 and 9. This year we have learnt about places around the house, how we earn and spend money and about holidays. We focused on grammatical principles such as the dative case and how to speak in paste tense, using a range of engaging learning techniques. These included games like battleships and memory cards, kahoots, and speed dating which were all very beneficial in helping us understand these complicated topics. As part of our learning experience we have also been immersed in the German culture through activities such as gingerbread house and Easter egg decorating. The entire Junior German experience has given us a range of knowledge about the language, increasing our confidence in communicating effectively in German and I am excited to continue to develop these with further study in Senior.
