VISUAL ART

The Visual Art Department has continued the Brisbane Girls Grammar School tradition of showcasing all Year levels and the vibrant art scene within the School with opportunities to view works in different exhibition spaces both physically within the School and more publicly through the social media platform, Facebook, in the weekly e-newsletter BGGS News and in the Grammar Gazette magazine. Throughout 2017, Year 12 students produced works addressing the concepts of ‘What It Means to be Human’ and ‘Life Fabric’ and the extraordinary artistic talent that Brisbane Girls Grammar School encompasses was able to be enjoyed by all in the end of year Senior Exhibition. Another highlight of the year has been the selection of Year 12 students, Emma Macbeth (12G), Grace McLay (12R) and Olivia Byrom (12E) in the Creative Generation Awards with Emma receiving a Commendation Award and Grace receiving an Excellence Award and inclusion in the Creative Generation Exhibition that will feature in 2018 at the Gallery of Modern Art. The fantastic use of so many different mediums across year levels has been exciting to watch. We have seen paintings, printmaking, stop- motion animation and installation pieces just to name a few. Visual Art in 2017 has once again allowed girls to foster their creativity while simultaneously solving visual problems and delving into a range of interesting ideas that are both personal and related to the wider world in which they live. VISUAL ART CAPTAIN, OLIVIA BYROM (12E)

It has been another exciting year for Visual Arts at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. There has been no shortage of creativity and so many marvellous works have been created across all Year levels that have displayed a fantastic range of skills and imagination. In each Year, girls have worked tirelessly to develop artworks with individual characteristics and styles, and it is safe to say that there are many budding artists among us! Visual Art workshops each term have also been exciting and involved many girls in the arts, irrespective of whether or not Visual Art is one of their elective subjects. This year, there have been student and teacher run workshops, focusing on drawing animals and faces, and even making miniature piñatas. Such workshops have allowed girls to experience and experiment with new art forms or to further hone their already existing skills. Art walks each term have also given girls the opportunity to experience various exhibitions throughout the year.

MUSIC

YEAR 11 SPACE, TIME, MOTION Year 11 Classroom Music students focused on Film composition. Each student was challenged to compose one to two minutes of music to compliment a short film that represented one of three themes — time, space or motion. The short films that each girl chose inspired the individual characteristic and mood of the composition and we learnt to manipulated the various music elements effectively to achieve sophisticated and exciting compositions. We have worked hard to create cohesive pieces of music that we were able to bring to life and perform live in groups of five to six girls. The film music is a unique piece of assessment that was both incredibly rewarding and stimulating as it gave us the opportunity to be creative and I’m looking forward to further film composition task. EARTH SYMPHONY 2017 This year, the classroom music students received a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity in the form of their Term II and III assessment pieces. Within these terms, the girls created three to five minute orchestral compositions, each accompanying a segment of David Attenborough’s 2006 documentary, ‘Planet Earth’. Once the pieces were crafted, the class, headed by Mr Michael McGrath performed a one-and-a-half hour, fully orchestrated symphony in which each girl’s composition combined to create a cohesive production. After hours and weeks of tireless rehearsal, the girls performed their symphony, live to the Brisbane Girls Grammar School community, while accompanying the visually outstanding documentary projected on the Gehrmann theatre big-screen. The experience of performing one’s own piece, as a soloist, along-side a full orchestra cannot be understated and all those involved in Earth Symphony will cherish the memories made forever.
