HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOLS

For many long-standing members of HPS, it was our last year in this service group — a group we have grown very fond of during the past few years and one that would not have been able to manage without the dedication of both Mrs Miles and our School Nurse, Mrs Lockyer (otherwise known as ‘Sister’). We hope that in our absence, Grammar girls will continue to raise awareness for cervical cancer and help support the ACCF. TIANA VILLAESCUSA (12H) AND SOPHIE CLACHER (12H) HPS CAPTAINS

TIME FOR CHANGE Time for Change is a relatively new service group that provides an opportunity for girls who may already have multiple service or co-curricular commitments. Unlike other service clubs at Girls Grammar, each term, through the distribution of newsletters, Time for Change focuses on addressing different themes. These newsletters provide members with varying degrees of awareness and participation: Be Aware, Be Informed and Be Involved. Be Aware introduces the topic, Be Informed details further online literature and information for members who are interested in the issue but have minimal time to spare, while Be Involved offers a chance for them to deepen their understanding of the cause, help to raise money, or donate supplies for charities. Highlights for 2017 include: raising awareness for the Cathy Freeman Foundation, which strives to improve education standards for Indigenous children; a significant contribution of blankets to the RSPCA; and donating supplies to support Operation Christmas Child to send Christmas gifts to children in need. I am incredibly proud of what Grammar girls have achieved this year and as Time for Change continues to gain momentum and increase in membership, I am confident that this valuable and rewarding work will continue in 2018. JOANNA HUANG (12R) Health Promoting Schools (HPS) is a service group directed towards all girls in all Year levels interested in promoting a healthy lifestyle. Healthy lifestyles are not the only thing we aim to target as the proceeds raised from our numerous fundraisers throughout the year, are donated to the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF). Through our numerous fundraisers, such as, our berries and yoghurt cups at Open Day, our water stalls, badges and healthy breakfasts, we were able to raise a grand amount for the tireless efforts of the ACCF. The ACCF is a non-for-profit organisation dedicated to eliminating cervical cancer in Australia and developing countries.

URALLA This year for Uralla has been one with many exciting events. We started the year with a focus on Indigenous art, to celebrate and educate ourselves about the many Indigenous cultures, and the common symbols in the artwork along with their significance and meaning. At the beginning of Term II, we commemorated National Close the Gap Day and Sorry Day by painting a mural, which represents the Rainbow Serpent, an icon from the creation story in Indigenous cultures, and also the journey we are taking to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in terms of education. We also had a Diversity Day forum later in the term, which showcased different perspectives from respected people within our community, including representatives from the local Indigenous community as well as representatives from the refugee and LGBTQI+ communities. From this point onwards as a club, we are looking to collaborate with Brisbane Grammar School to hold a clothing drive to donate to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. This clothing will help Indigenous families who are rushed to hospital in an emergency from rural areas and have no time to take any possessions. GEMMA NYSSEN (12E)
