VOLLEYBALL The Brisbane Girls Grammar School 2017 Volleyball season saw the return of many players and coaches from past seasons, as well as welcoming many new players and coaches. Following trials, a record seventy-four girls were selected, making up eight teams across seven divisions. A highlight of the season was Open’s intense game against Moreton Bay College (MBC). The game was a very close five-set set match that resulted in their only loss of the season, and a tied premiership with MBC. The Year 7A, 8A, 8B, 10 and Senior A teams all performed exceptionally throughout the entire season, winning the premierships in their respective divisions. The 7Bs and 9s also finished a respectable fourth and eighth in their divisions. This incredibly successful season helped us achieve our goal of winning more premierships than last year. We would like to thank all girls who played QGSSSA Volleyball this year, as the season would not have been so tremendous without your hard-work, enthusiasm, dedication and passion for the sport. Outside the QGSSSA competition, additional tournaments such as Junior and Senior Schools Cup took place. These competitions provided the girls with an excellent opportunity to challenge themselves, expand their skills and to further enjoy Volleyball. In addition to the Junior and Senior Schools Cup, Australian
WATER POLO
Brisbane Girls Grammar School’s Water Polo season went from October 2016 to March 2017, competing in the Brisbane Water Polo Incorporated competition. We played across five different venues: the Valley Pool, Somerville House, St Rita’s College, All Hallows’ School and Stuartholme School each Saturday in Term IV 2016 and most of Term I in 2017. We had a large number of teams playing, ranging from the U12B team to the Open team. Some age groups had multiple teams in the A division, as well as teams competing in the B and C divisions. Overall our season was very successful. More than half of our respective teams were successful in finishing in the top four of their division. Two of our Girls Grammar teams battled for the premiership, fighting down to the wire. Our U13Cs were victorious and crowned 13C Premiers 2016/2017. Aside from our general club competition, many of our players were selected in School representative teams, showcasing the Girls Grammar talent. We entered several teams in the State Titles and Club National Competitions including 14 and Under State Titles, 16 and Under State Titles, 18 and Under State Titles, as well as the 14 and Under Club Nationals held on the Gold Coast, and 16 and Under Club Nationals held in Hobart. A number of Brisbane Girls Grammar School students were selected in Queensland State and Australian teams. Congratulations must go to Sabine Hatzipetrou (8M), Jasmin Riksen (11L), Chelsea Warat (9R), Georgia De Stefani (9W), and Abby Andrews (12W) who in the June/July holidays represented Queensland competing in the 2017 Sydney Water Polo Youth Festival. Co-captain, Abby Andrews was honoured to have represented Australia in the Born 2000 team in Europe during July and August, and attended the Australia Stingers squad for a training camp in October. As captains we have both enjoyed the opportunity to become more involved in the Girls Grammar and Brisbane Water Polo community. It was wonderful to be able to watch current players improve their talent and develop their skills. We enjoyed seeing the younger players learn to play the game for the very first time and develop a passion for the sport. We extend our appreciation to the Water Polo Co-ordinator, Ms Luiten, for keeping the teams on track throughout the season. We would like to welcome all past, present and incoming students to Brisbane Girls Grammar School Water Polo for the upcoming season and hope that it is an enjoyable and fulfilling one. Last season was full of talent and excitement, so let’s keep it up for this season. ABBY ANDREWS (12W) AND ASHLEE WARAT (12R) CAPTAINS
Volleyball Schools Cup will take place in December this year, where two of our teams will compete at this challenging, but rewarding tournament. Each coach put in lots of time and effort into their respective teams and must be thanked for helping to make this season so incredible and memorable. We would also like to thank Miss Johnson for her commitment to volleyball, her organisation and constant enthusiasm and support. As captains of the sport, it has been a pleasure to lead the 2017 Volleyball season. It has been an extremely rewarding experience and we have enjoyed watching all the players achieve so much and develop as individuals on and off the court. KATE BREEDING (12B) AND LAUREN MURPHY (12G) CAPTAINS
