2016 GRAMMAR SPORTSWOMEN OF EXCELLENCE

The annual Brisbane Girls Grammar School Sportswomen of Excellence celebration took place in the Gehrmann Theatre on the evening of Wednesday 19 October. Two-hundred guests enjoyed a discussion between Dean of School and keynote speaker for the evening, Mrs Pauline Harvey-Short (Harvey, 1971) and special guests 2016 Rio Olympian, Ms Fiona Albert (2007) and dual Olympian, Ms Naomi McCarthy OAM. The panel focused on the themes espoused earlier this year by the International Olympic Committee: friendship, respect, equality, excellence and legacy. Girls Grammar Sports Captains also participated in the conversation, which highlighted the importance of playing sports throughout formative years, and how great friendships can grow out of mutual respect in the pursuit of excellence. School Sports Captains Erica Schmelzer (12E) and Emma Bills (12W) impressed the audience with their reflections on the significance of participation in sport at the School including the remarkable statistic that over seventy per cent of the student population participates in competitive sport. Principal, Ms Jacinda Euler gave great praise to the leadership and commitment of students and the staff who coordinate and manage the many School sports teams and their numerous activities. The evening concluded with a memorable gesture when Fiona Albert presented her 2016 Australian Olympic uniform to Ms Euler in recognition of the support and encouragement she received as a student at Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
