bank in the boat and didn't have to swim. Before she came to Brisbane, Ne11's mum was worried about the sharks, snakes and poisonous spiders. I'm not sure she'd thought that she should be worried about Nell being in a sinking boat on the Brisbane River. Nell's favcurite adventure in Australia was when we took her up to a friend's farm at Mt. Mee on her very flrst day She said that in Germany you could never pick mandarins off a tree and eat them because they just don't have the space for the land. She loved learning about the different animals that lived on their property, and saw her flrst kookaburra, sulphur-crested cockatoo and rainbow lorrkeet The time whtzzed by We would have loved to have Nell stay for longer, and to take her to some more places. She real1y loved being in Australia and I really hope she can come back I would love to visit her in Germany, and her mum has rnvited both my brother and I to stay with them in Essen. It's realiy interesting hearing about different countries, and it's great showing a visitor around. I really hope that I have the opportunity to hcst another exchange student before I leave the School
I FELT THAT I KNEW NELL RICHTER BEFORE SHE ARRIVED. We'd sent each other lots of emails, and my family and Nell and her murrL had talked on Skype Ne11 was really impressed that Grrls Grammar teacher Ms Garson had taken the trouble to come to the airport too, at such an early hour on Sunday morning, just to welcome her. Although Nel1 ts a couple of years older than me, it was really fun having her here Nell goes to a grammar school in Essen, cailed a Gymnasium, and doesn't have to wear a uniform Given it was July, Mum suggested that she might be warmer wearing long trousers to school when she arrived at the breakfast table in shorts on her first mornrng ! She is a really good rower, and used to be part of the German youth development squad When she saw the rowers on the Brisbane River she was rea11y keen to give it a try In Germany they train in the afternoons, so we did have to explain a few times that she would be training with Girls Grammar aI five in the morning. She said that she really enjoyed it but the second time her crew went out, the boat sank Fortunately they made it back to the
