Contest of the Houses

swimming

On Friday 2 March Girls Grammar filled The Sleeman Centre at Chandler for the annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival. Amidst a great atmosphere of fun and competition, students and staff wore their House colours with pride and determination. The enthusiastic participation of the competitors made the day a great success. The Lilley Interhouse Swimming Cup for most overall points was awarded to O’Connor House. They also won the Lt Col Plant Challenge Cup for individual events and tied with Woolcock House for the Burrell Cup for relays.

The final event of the day, the 50 metre Freestyle Championship, proved to be an incredibly exciting event. With four of the competitors on 29 individual points, times and placings in this event would determine the overall School Swimming Champion. Helen Singer (11M) won this race in a time of 28.68 seconds, her personal best time and ultimately was named School Swimming Champion. The large amount of participation and team support from both students and staff made the afternoon an exciting and colourful success. Beanland won the trophy for Champion House followed by England in second place and Gibson House in third. The overall individual cross country champion for 2007 was Bethany Holt (10B), after running the fastest course time. Victoria Park was a mass of colour on Thursday 29 March, as runners competed in the annual Interhouse cross country competition to earn their House the championship title for 2007. Cross Country

Volleyball Teams Go National Last October the Years 8, 9 and 10 Girls

Grammar teams participated in the Queensland Schools Cup, a gruelling three day event played at various venues throughout Brisbane. Both the Years 9 and 10 teams won Silver medals in their respective Honours division, while the Year 8 team finished seventh. The teams went on to compete in the Australian Schools Cup, held in Melbourne last December. The competition was intense with many of the best teams from all over the country and from New Zealand competing. In this tournament the Year 9 and Year 10 teams reached the medal round, ultimately finishing fourth. The Year 8 team, whose skills and game play had developed enormously through their participation in both competitions, were successful in winning the Bronze medal in Melbourne. Participation in such events gave the girls great skill-building opportunities and built strong team spirit as well as giving them the experience and confidence to try out for representative teams. Currently seven players are in Metropolitan North teams and four are trialling for the State Under 17 team.

Water Polo has had another exceptional season — one of growth and depth of achievements. For the first time ever, all A division teams and all B division teams, together with two C division teams have qualified for the semi-finals of the Brisbane Club competition. The season has had many highlights including the State Championships for U14s, the Queensland Schools competition, where ten Grammar girls represented Metropolitan North and Peta Masters (12W) was named in the Queensland Schoolgirls team for 2007. The U14 State Championships were held on the Gold Coast in December. The School entered two teams — the 14As and 13As. The 14A team won the bronze medal while the 13A team did not win a medal, however did gain valuable team experience. Seven members of the 14A team were chosen in the State squad and many have been included in the Junior Breakers teams for the National U14 Championships to be held in April this year.
