Mathapatta
Mathapatta is an exciting experience for students in Years 9 and 10, who share a passion for mathematics and want to further engage outside their usual learning environment. Held at Marrapatta, we got hands-on with maths in real-life situations. We dove into the principles behind waves; discovered maths in everyday games; and even enjoyed some chocolate to keep our brains fuelled. One highlight was learning about parabolas while roasting marshmallows. After learning a bit more about these curves, we teamed up to design a barbecue that strategically positioned our marshmallows for the perfect roast in the sun's rays. Not only did Mathapatta offer a diverse range of engaging activities and workshops, but we were also able to build connection through the fun team challenges—such as trivia and the Great Race—where friendly competition and the chance to win prizes added to the excitement. Overall, Mathapatta was an unforgettable experience that brought maths to life in new and exciting ways. We would like to thank Mrs Lee Mazzaglia, Mrs Betty-Anne Briggs, the many Mathematics teachers, and all the staff at Marrapatta who invested their time and effort to make this experience possible. Mathapatta was undoubtedly a highlight of our year, and one that will be cherished in our memories for years to come. Jolina Chen (10R) and Alexis Cho (10M)
Robotics Club
Every Wednesday afternoon, students gather to enhance their skills in design, engineering, and computer programming robotics. This Club is dedicated to preparing for the annual FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), a prestigious International, National and State Robotics competition. In this competition, secondary students design, build, and program robots to compete in alliance formats against other teams. Beyond the competitive aspect, the Club occasionally participates in workshops with local industries and Brisbane Grammar School to further develop their technological prowess. Angelica Skye Ng (11B)
STARS
The Student-Teacher Astronomy Research Symposium (STARS) is a co-curricular opportunity open to all Year 10 to 12 students passionate about astronomy. Under the guidance of Ms Gerri Bernard and Mr Anthony Lumsden, girls can access the Dorothy Hill Observatory and investigate complex astronomical phenomena. The first project completed when joining STARS is to track the transit of exoplanets and then publish that data to online databases. The project offers the opportunity to learn how to use new software and access interesting NASA resources. The next project is to write a research paper on a double star system. STARS is an amazing opportunity to learn new skills and foster curiosity for our universe. It has been one of the most rewarding opportunities I have received at BGGS, and I would recommend it to anyone with a passion for learning. Sophie List (12E)
